Chapter 4 - The Shadow PartnerVIRAL HEADLINE: She Thought She Was The Mastermind, But Her Own Brother Was The Real Villain!

“Trust is a luxury the desperate can never afford.”
Inside the interrogation room of the Federal Building, Tabitha sat under the harsh fluorescent lights, her designer clothes crumpled, her makeup ruined. Across the table sat Mrs. Eleanor Harrington, dressed impeccably in a dark navy suit, calmly sipping coffee from a paper cup.
“You think you won, don’t you?” Tabitha spat, her voice raspy from hours of yelling at public defenders. “You think because you put me in these cuffs, you’ve saved your precious son? Robin is weak, Eleanor! He’s soft! He believed every word I said for two years because he was desperate to be loved for who he was, not his last name!”
Mrs. Harrington set her coffee cup down gently. “Robin is empathetic, Tabitha. There is a difference between kindness and weakness. A difference you failed to understand when you tried to destroy him.”
“It wasn’t my idea!” Tabitha suddenly burst out, leaning across the table as far as her handcuffs would allow. “The Paris contract—it wasn’t my plan! Julian forced me to do it!”
Mrs. Harrington raised an eyebrow. “Oh? The loving brother who backed your every move?”
“He isn’t my brother!” Tabitha cried, tears of rage finally breaking through her cold exterior. “You were right! He told me three years ago that if I didn’t help him tap into the Harrington accounts, he would release evidence that my mother committed suicide in prison because of her debts! He manipulated me! He orchestrated the entire meeting in Aspen!”
“I know,” Mrs. Harrington said softly.
Tabitha stopped mid-sentence. “What?”
“I knew Julian was the brain behind the operation from the moment your firm’s debt structure was created,” Mrs. Harrington explained calmly. “You are arrogant and cruel, Tabitha, but you lack the financial intellect to construct a forty-million-dollar cross-border shell network. You were merely the bait.”
“Then why let me take the fall?” Tabitha screamed. “Why humiliate me in front of Robin? Why make me look like a monster?”
“Because you are a monster,” Mrs. Harrington replied without a trace of hesitation. “Julian pulled the strings, but you enjoyed the cruelty. You enjoyed making my household staff feel worthless. You enjoyed throwing dirty water on an old woman because you thought she was beneath you. Julian gave you the weapon, but you pulled the trigger with pleasure.”
Tabitha slammed her cuffed hands against the metal table, the sound ringing out in the small room. “I will make a deal with the prosecutor! I will give them Julian! I will give them every bank account, every offshore trust, every piece of paper he ever forced me to sign!”
“You can try,” Mrs. Harrington said, standing up and buttoning her jacket. “But Julian is already gone.”
Tabitha’s eyes widened. “What do you mean, gone?”
“Thirty minutes ago, Julian Vance boarded a private jet at Teterboro Airport bound for a non-extradition territory in South America,” Mrs. Harrington said, looking down at the broken girl in front of her. “And do you know how he paid for the flight, Tabitha? He emptied your private offshore trust fund—the one you thought he was protecting for you.”

Tabitha’s breath hit a wall. She stared at Eleanor, her mind refusing to compute the final, devastating betrayal.
“He left you with nothing,” Mrs. Harrington whispered as she reached for the door handle. “Not even a penny to pay for your bail.”
