Chapter 4 - THE CHOPPING BLOCK

"You can't negotiate with a man who has nothing left to lose but his soul."The two mercenaries moved through the ruined cabin with professional caution. They wore night-vision goggles and carried suppressed rifles, their movements synchronized.

"Target is supposed to be here," the first one whispered into his comms. "We have footprints in the snow outside."

"Find him. Director Cross wants the ledger, but he doesn't need the SEAL alive once we have it," the second replied.

They split up. One moved toward the kitchen, the other toward the bedroom.

The first mercenary stepped into the kitchen, his rifle raised. He checked behind the counter. Nothing. He turned toward the pantry—

A shadow detatched itself from the ceiling.

Dan dropped down behind the man, his legs locking around the mercenary's neck in a silent chokehold. The man thrashed, trying to raise his weapon, but Dan’s grip was like iron. Within eight seconds, the mercenary went limp.

Dan silently took the man’s rifle—a customized MK18—and his tactical vest, stripping his comms earpiece.

"...Report, Team Lead," a voice crackled in the earpiece. "Do you have visual on Brooks?"

Dan pressed the push-to-talk button. He didn't try to mimic the mercenary’s voice. He just spoke in his own cold, dead tone.

"I have the ledger," Dan said. "And I have your men. Tell Cross I’m coming back. But we're changing the terms of the deal."

"Brooks?" the voice on the other end gasped. "You don't dictate terms. We have the girl."

"And I have your money," Dan replied. "This ledger doesn't just have accounts. It has the routing numbers for your offshore shell companies. I’ve already set up a scheduled transfer. If I don't enter a bypass code every sixty minutes, fifty million dollars of Redmont’s black funds will be distributed to the federal witness protection program and the DEA."

A long silence stretched over the radio.

Then, Julian Cross's voice came through, calm but thin. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," Dan said. "I'll see you at the old copper mine at midnight. Bring Hannah. If I see one sniper, one drone, or one extra man, I press enter. And your company becomes a charity."

Dan cut the transmission. He looked down at Valor, who was standing on three legs, his eyes bright and alert.

"Can you run, buddy?" Dan asked.

May you like

Valor barked once—a sharp, confident sound.

"Then let's go get her back."
