Chapter 5 - THE CONVERGENCE

"The line between a trap and an ambush is just a matter of who fires first."The abandoned copper mine was a colossal ruin of rusted corrugated iron and rotting timber, perched on the edge of a deep canyon. The wind howled through the empty elevator shafts like a dying animal.

Julian Cross stood in the center of the main sorting floor, illuminated by the harsh glare of portable work lights. Behind him, two guards held Hannah. She looked exhausted, her skin pale, the blue liquid in the device beside her bubbling faster now.

"Ten minutes, Mr. Cross," Victor Hail said, checking his watch. He was pacing nervously, a sidearm clutched in his hand. "The SEAL isn't coming. He’s going to leak the funds. We need to leave."

"He will come," Cross said smoothly. "He is a soldier. He has a savior complex. It is his greatest weakness."

A shadow appeared in the doorway.

Daniel Brooks walked into the light. He was unarmed, his hands raised, his jacket open to show he wasn't wearing a tactical vest.

"Where is the ledger?" Cross demanded.

Dan reached into his pocket and pulled out the USB drive, holding it between two fingers. "Right here. Let her go."

"The bypass code first," Cross said. "For the transfer."

"We do it at the same time," Dan countered. "I hand you the drive and the code, you hand me the transmitter and the release key for the pump."

Cross nodded to his guard. The guard stepped forward, carrying the medical device with the blue liquid.

But as the guard approached Dan, a dark shape launched itself from the rafters above.

Valor descended like a furry thunderbolt, his jaws locking onto the guard’s throat. The man screamed, dropping the medical device.

"No!" Cross yelled, drawing his pistol.

But Dan was already moving. He slid across the dusty concrete floor, catching the falling medical device just inches before it shattered on the ground. If the glass broke and the signal lost connection, Hannah’s heart would stop.

With his other hand, Dan pulled the suppressed Sig Sauer he had hidden in the small of his back and fired two shots.

The first bullet caught Victor Hail in the forehead, ending his search for revenge permanently. The second hit the guard struggling with Valor, dropping him to the floor.

Cross scrambled backward, firing wildly. One of his bullets clipped Dan's thigh, sending him crashing to his knees.

"You fool!" Cross screamed, aiming his gun directly at Hannah’s head. "I'll kill her myself!"

BANG.

The shot didn't come from Cross. It didn't come from Dan.

It came from Hannah.

She had managed to slip one of her hands free during the chaos, grabbing the fallen guard’s sidearm. The bullet took Cross through the shoulder, spinning him around and knocking his gun from his hand.

Dan dragged himself over to Hannah, immediately connecting the transmitter device back to her harness. The flashing red light turned back to a solid, calm green.

"I have you," Dan breathed, his face covered in sweat and soot. "I have you."

"Is it over?" she whispered, her eyes glossy.

"Not yet," Dan said, looking at Cross, who was crawling toward his dropped gun. Dan stepped on Cross’s hand, crushing the bones beneath his boot. He picked up the transmitter and the manual release key from Cross’s pocket.

He inserted the key into Hannah’s collarbone device. With a soft hiss, the metallic cylinder unlocked, releasing its grip on her artery. Dan pulled it away, throwing the deadly device into the dark depths of the mine shaft.

Hannah let out a long, shuddering breath, her body collapsing into Dan’s arms.

"We got them," Dan said. "We got them all."

But as he looked down at Julian Cross, the bleeding director began to laugh. It was a wet, rattling sound.

"You... you think this is the end?" Cross gasped, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "You think I was the Director? I’m just... a regional manager, Brooks. The board... the board already knows where you are."

Cross’s hand twitched, pointing to his own chest.

Dan ripped open Cross’s shirt.

There was no heart monitor. Instead, there was a digital screen sewn under his skin, displaying a map of the valley with a flashing red dot directly over their location. And beneath it, a text message from an unknown number:
