CHAPTER 1 — THE DINNER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Nobody in the Romano mansion expected a five-year-old girl to become the center of a family war.

Not the wealthy guests sipping imported wine beneath crystal chandeliers.

Not the servants who had learned to lower their eyes whenever the lady of the house spoke.

And certainly not Victoria Romano herself—the elegant billionaire heiress whose smile was as sharp as a knife.

Yet in less than sixty seconds, one cruel decision would expose a secret buried for years.

A secret powerful enough to destroy the Romano family's perfect image forever.

It began with a plate of leftover pasta.

Little Emma sat quietly on the edge of the enormous marble kitchen island, hugging her worn teddy bear so tightly its fur had almost disappeared.

She wasn't supposed to be there.

Children like Emma weren't meant to be seen in places like the Romano mansion.

Her mother, Sofia, worked as one of the housekeepers.

She had spent the last three years polishing floors, washing expensive dishes, and pretending not to hear the insults whispered behind her back.

Emma knew the rules.

Stay quiet.

Don't touch anything.

Don't make rich people angry.

Tonight she had followed every single one of them.

She waited patiently while her mother finished cleaning after the lavish engagement dinner upstairs.

The guests had eaten lobster, wagyu steak, truffle pasta, and desserts decorated with edible gold.

Enough food had been left untouched to feed several families.

Emma hadn't complained once.

She simply smiled when Sofia quietly placed a small plate of leftover pasta in front of her.

"Eat slowly," Sofia whispered.

"I'll finish here, and then we'll go home."

Emma nodded happily.

To her, cold pasta tasted like a feast.

She took one tiny bite.

Then another.

She smiled.

For the first time that day, she didn't feel hungry anymore.

That was exactly when expensive high heels echoed across the marble floor.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every servant instantly stiffened.

Victoria Romano had entered the kitchen.

Tall.

Perfectly dressed in black silk.

Diamond earrings sparkling beneath the lights.

Not a single strand of dark hair out of place.

She glanced around the room as if inspecting property rather than people.

Then her eyes landed on Emma.

The smile disappeared from her face.

"What is she doing here?"

Silence.

No one answered.

Victoria repeated herself, colder this time.

"I asked... what is she doing in my kitchen?"

Sofia stepped forward immediately.

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

"My daughter has been waiting for me all evening."

"I only gave her some leftovers."

Victoria slowly looked down at the child's plate.

Then at Emma.

Then back at Sofia.

Her expression became almost amused.

"So..."

"The servants now think my mansion is a charity?"

"No, ma'am."

"I—"

Before Sofia could finish...

Victoria picked up the plate.

Emma instinctively reached toward it.

"Please..."

"I'm still eating."

Victoria didn't even look at her.

Without hesitation...

She turned toward the trash can.

And dumped every bite into it.

The pasta.

The bread.

Even the tiny plastic fork.

Everything.

The sound of the plate hitting the bottom of the garbage echoed through the silent kitchen.

Emma stared at the trash can.

Her little stomach growled.

She didn't cry.

She didn't scream.

She simply looked confused.

As though she couldn't understand why someone would throw away perfectly good food.

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm so sorry..."

Victoria interrupted.

"If she's hungry..."

"Teach her parents to work harder."

Several guests standing near the kitchen entrance laughed quietly.

One even raised a glass.

Someone muttered,

"People always know their place."

Emma lowered her head.

Her tiny fingers tightened around the old teddy bear.

The room believed the moment was over.

Another rich woman humiliating another poor employee.

Nothing unusual.

But then...

Emma slowly looked up.

Straight into Victoria's eyes.

Her voice was barely louder than a whisper.

"My daddy said..."

"...you weren't always rich either."

Everything stopped.

Victoria's face lost its color.

The smile vanished.

The laughter disappeared.

One champagne glass slipped from someone's hand and shattered across the marble floor.

Sofia froze.

She had never...

Ever...

Heard Emma mention her father.

Because according to everyone...

Emma's father had died years ago.

So who...

Had taught the little girl that sentence?

And why did Victoria suddenly look as though she had just seen a ghost?
