CHAPTER 5 — THE CHILDREN THEY ERASED… AND THE SON WHO BETRAYED THEM ALL

The mansion disappeared into darkness.

Women screamed.

Guests pushed one another toward the exits.

Crystal shattered across the marble floor as people stumbled blindly through the ballroom.

Outside...

Police floodlights immediately illuminated the estate.

Federal agents stormed every entrance.

Inside the underground vault beneath Anthony Whitmore's estate, another team of FBI investigators stood frozen before the wall of stolen identities.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Because the little girl's voice still echoed through the speakers.

"Please... don't take me away from my mommy again..."

Daniel slowly lowered his head.

His hands were shaking.

He had heard that recording once before.

Twenty-two years ago.

The night everything disappeared.

The commander looked at Daniel through the video feed.

"You recognize it."

Daniel nodded.

"I recorded it."

Everyone stared.

Victoria whispered,

"You... did?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"It was the last thing my brother asked me to keep."

He swallowed hard.

"My nephew was terrified of hospitals."

"He cried every time strangers wore white coats."

The commander's voice became softer.

"That recording came from inside Whitmore's underground facility."

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Then the hospital still exists."

THE HIDDEN FLOOR

Beneath the vault...

FBI engineers discovered something impossible.

The concrete floor sounded hollow.

Ground-penetrating radar revealed another level nearly sixty feet underground.

One officer whispered,

"There's an entire building beneath the building."

Explosives specialists carefully removed the reinforced concrete.

An old steel elevator appeared.

Its doors had not been opened in decades.

The power was gone.

The emergency crank slowly lowered the elevator.

Every second felt longer than the last.

When the doors finally opened...

A cold blast of stale air escaped.

The smell hit everyone first.

Antiseptic.

Dust.

Old medicine.

Death.

Flashlights swept across the darkness.

Rows of hospital beds.

Incubators.

Operating lights.

Rusting surgical equipment.

Tiny bassinets lined the walls.

Some still carried faded paper name tags.

Baby No. 12.

Baby No. 41.

Baby No. 83.

Not names.

Numbers.

The agents walked deeper.

One investigator suddenly stopped.

"Oh my God..."

Everyone followed his flashlight.

Thousands...

Not hundreds...

Thousands of baby photographs covered the walls from floor to ceiling.

Each picture had one word stamped beneath it.

SOLD

Or...

REPLACED

Or...

FAILED

Even the veteran homicide detectives looked sick.

One female agent quietly stepped outside and vomited.

THE NURSE WHO SURVIVED

A voice suddenly echoed from the darkness.

"I've been waiting..."

Every weapon pointed forward.

An elderly woman slowly stepped from behind an abandoned nurse's station.

She looked nearly eighty.

Thin.

Fragile.

Still wearing a faded hospital uniform.

Her name tag read:

EVELYN CARTER

One FBI agent gasped.

"She died nineteen years ago."

The old woman smiled sadly.

"No."

"They buried someone else."

Daniel stared at her.

"Nurse Evelyn..."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I promised your brother I'd stay alive."

Victoria stepped closer.

"You know what happened?"

"I helped deliver every baby born here."

She looked around the underground hospital.

"I also watched them disappear."

Emma hid behind Sofia.

The old nurse smiled gently at her.

"You have your father's eyes."

Daniel asked the only question that mattered.

"Who built this place?"

The old nurse looked upward.

"Not Whitmore."

Everyone froze.

Victoria frowned.

"What?"

Whitmore wasn't the mastermind?

Evelyn nodded.

"He only inherited it."

THE ORIGINAL FOUNDER

The old nurse slowly walked toward a locked cabinet.

Inside...

She removed an old black photograph.

Three young men stood together.

One was Anthony Whitmore.

Another was Victoria's father.

The third...

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"No..."

Victoria took the photograph.

Her hands began trembling.

"Impossible."

The third man smiled confidently into the camera.

He looked almost identical to Daniel.

Only older.

Sharper.

Crueler.

Daniel whispered,

"My father..."

The room fell silent.

Evelyn nodded.

"Samuel Cruz."

Daniel backed away.

"No..."

"My father died before I was born."

"No."

Evelyn's voice broke.

"He abandoned you."

Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"My father..."

"...started all this?"

Evelyn nodded.

"He created the network."

"He discovered rich families would pay millions for healthy newborns."

"Whitmore became the lawyer."

"Victor Romano became the businessman."

"Samuel Cruz became the supplier."

Victoria covered her mouth.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Everything he believed...

Everything...

Had just collapsed.

The man he had spent his life trying to honor...

Had been the first monster.

THE FINAL FILE

The commander opened the last cabinet.

Unlike the others...

Only one folder rested inside.

Across the front...

Written in red ink...

PROJECT HEIR

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of that."

Neither had Whitmore.

Inside the folder...

Only one photograph.

A smiling twelve-year-old boy.

Standing beside Anthony Whitmore.

Victoria suddenly dropped the folder.

"No..."

Sofia picked it up.

Then looked toward the ballroom security cameras.

Toward the Romano mansion.

Toward the room where dozens of FBI agents were still interviewing witnesses.

One man had quietly remained calm through everything.

Victoria's personal attorney.

The trusted family adviser.

The man who had worked beside Whitmore for twenty years.

Michael Hayes.

The smiling boy in the photograph...

Was Michael.

Daniel whispered,

"He wasn't protecting Whitmore..."

"He was raised by him."

Evelyn nodded.

"Project Heir wasn't about stealing babies."

"It was about creating perfect replacements."

Victoria frowned.

"Replacements?"

Evelyn looked directly into her eyes.

"When powerful families became inconvenient..."

"They were quietly replaced."

Nobody understood.

Then she continued.

"The real Michael Hayes died when he was twelve."

"The boy who inherited his name..."

"...was bought."

Every person in the room felt cold.

Whitmore hadn't only stolen children.

He had replaced them.

Politicians.

Judges.

Business heirs.

Entire bloodlines.

No one knew who was real anymore.

BACK AT THE MANSION

An FBI agent suddenly burst into the ballroom.

"Director!"

"What?"

"We can't find Michael Hayes."

Victoria turned pale.

"He was standing beside me five minutes ago."

Security cameras were pulled up immediately.

Everyone watched.

Michael calmly walked through the ballroom.

Smiling.

Greeting guests.

Shaking hands.

Then...

He entered the private security office.

The cameras inside immediately went black.

Daniel shouted,

"Open that room!"

Federal agents rammed the reinforced steel door.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The lock finally exploded.

The room was empty.

Only one monitor remained active.

Michael appeared on the screen.

Still smiling.

He slowly removed the expensive suit jacket.

Underneath...

He wore tactical gear.

Behind him stood twelve armed men.

Every one of them carried the same tattoo.

A small black sparrow.

Daniel's face turned white.

"The Sparrow Circle..."

Evelyn whispered,

"They're still alive..."

Michael smiled into the camera.

"You arrested the old generation."

"But you never found the children."

Victoria frowned.

"What children?"

Michael's smile widened.

"The ones we raised."

He pressed a remote.

Dozens of screens appeared behind him.

Men.

Women.

Doctors.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Military officers.

News anchors.

Corporate CEOs.

Hundreds of faces.

All smiling.

All adults now.

All once stolen as children.

Michael spoke calmly.

"We don't need to steal babies anymore."

"We already became the people who run your country."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Daniel finally understood.

Whitmore's empire had never been about money.

It had been about replacing the future.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

"You think tonight is your victory."

He laughed softly.

"It was only our recruitment test."

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Emma quietly reached for Daniel's old teddy bear.

She hugged it tightly.

Then she whispered something only Sofia heard.

"Mommy..."

"What is it?"

Emma looked toward the dark television.

"Daddy told me there was one good Sparrow."

Sofia frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emma reached inside the teddy bear one last time.

She pulled out a tiny silver key.

Attached to it was a handwritten note.

Only four words.

Find Noah Before Sunrise.

Daniel stared at the key.

His breathing stopped.

Victoria looked at him.

"Who's Noah?"

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"My son."

Victoria frowned.

"I thought your son died."

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"He didn't."

"I lied."

The room froze.

Daniel looked directly into the camera one last time.

"I lied because if they ever learned Noah was alive..."

"...they would have turned him into the next Michael Hayes."

Outside...

The first rays of dawn began to rise over the Romano estate.

But somewhere in America...

A young man named Noah had no idea that the most dangerous organization in the country...

Had just learned he existed.
