Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Clay

Under the cover of a pitch-black midnight, while Camille slept soundly in the master bedroom, Darian followed Mrs. Okafor to the detached guest cottage at the back of the estate.

Inside Mrs. Okafor's tidy living room, three dusty cardboard boxes sat on the table. Mrs. Okafor carefully lifted out a clumsy, unevenly painted blue clay pitcher. It was bright, messy, and filled with the chaotic joy Sophia had brought into every room she entered.

"Sophia gave this to me two weeks before her accident," Mrs. Okafor said softly. "She told me, 'Mama Okafor, if the lights ever go out in this house, look inside the blue jar.' I thought she was talking about the fuses. But after she passed, and after that woman arrived, I realized Sophia was talking about a different kind of darkness."

Darian reached inside the pitcher. His fingers brushed against something hard and metallic taped to the inner rim. He carefully pulled it out.

It was a rugged, military-grade USB drive, encased in a waterproof alloy.

Engraved on the metal casing was a single word in Sophia’s elegant handwriting: LUCENT.

Darian's heart hammered against his ribs. He hurried back to his office in the main house, locking the door behind him. He plugged the drive into his secure, air-gapped terminal.

The screen flickered to life, requiring a password. He tried Sophia's birthday, Layla's birthday, the date of their wedding. Access Denied. Access Denied. Access Denied.

He had only two attempts left before the drive would self-destruct.

Darian stared at the blinking cursor, his mind racing. He closed his eyes and thought of Sophia. He remembered the day they bought the mansion. He remembered her looking at the sterile white walls and saying: “We buy it and make it less afraid.”

Darian opened his eyes. He typed in: MakeItLessAfraid

Click.

The screen flashed green. A video file appeared on the screen. Darian clicked play.

Sophia’s face filled the screen. She looked tired, with dark circles under her eyes, but her gaze was sharp and full of determination.

"Darian," she said, her recorded voice making tears spring to his eyes. "If you are watching this, it means I am no longer with you. And it means someone is trying to use Project Lucent to destroy our family. I need you to listen to me very carefully."

Darian leaned closer to the screen, his breath hitching.

"The rumors are true," Sophia said. "There is a backdoor in the Lucent protocol. But it isn't a vulnerability I created for malicious reasons. I built it because I discovered that someone within our own board of directors was leaking our security codes to a foreign cartel. They wanted to steal our technology to disable the national power grid. I created the backdoor as a trap. It is a digital honey-pot. Anyone who tries to use this master key will instantly upload their own digital signature, their location, and their entire database to the FBI."

Sophia paused, taking a deep breath. "The man behind this is Arthur Laurent. Camille Laurent's father. They have been planning to infiltrate our lives for months, Darian. They staged my car accident."

Darian gasped, his blood running cold.

"It wasn't an accident, Darian," Sophia’s recorded voice shook, a tear slipping down her cheek. "They cut my brake lines. I managed to survive the initial crash long enough to hide this drive, but I know they won't let me live. They want Aegis Tech, and they will use Camille to get to you and Layla. Do not trust her. Do not let her near our daughter. The key to activating the honey-pot trap is in Layla’s room. She has the physical key."

The video ended.

Darian sat in the silence of his office, his mind spinning in absolute horror. Sophia’s death wasn't a tragic twist of fate. It was murder. And the woman sleeping down the hall was the daughter of the man who had ordered it.

Suddenly, Darian heard a soft creak behind him.

He spun around.

Camille stood in the doorway of his office, wearing a silk robe. She was holding a glass of water, but her eyes were fixed on his computer screen.

"So," she said, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. "You found it."
