Chapter 5 - The Blue Dress

Layla had always been a quiet child, but tonight, she was a ghost.

She had slipped out of her room through the secret playroom passageway that Sophia had built for her—a small, carpeted tunnel that led directly to the secondary pantry downstairs, completely bypassing the main hallways and the balcony where Camille’s guard was watching.

While Camille was busy threatening Darian in the office, Layla had gone to the one place she felt safe: the kitchen. And there, on the low counter, she had found the object Mrs. Okafor had brought in from the garage.

It was a small, hand-painted ceramic bird—a whistle Sophia had made for her. Inside the hollow whistle was a tiny, gold-plated microchip. This was the physical key Sophia had mentioned in her video.

Darian saw his daughter standing in the shadows of the hallway. He knew he had to keep Camille's attention entirely on him.

"The board members won't agree to a merger without seeing the decryption key in action," Darian said, raising his voice slightly to drown out any noise Layla might make. "They need proof that the Lucent protocol is fully operational under the Laurent Group's server."

"Then we will show them," Camille said, plugging the military-grade USB drive into her own high-powered laptop. "Log into the master server, Darian. Let's run the demonstration."

Darian began typing on his keyboard, his fingers flying across the keys. He wasn't logging into the master server. He was setting up a secure, encrypted local network connection to the small ceramic bird Layla was holding. The bird contained a short-range NFC (Near-Field Communication) transmitter. If Layla came within ten feet of the office, the microchip in her whistle would automatically pair with his computer and activate the FBI honey-pot trap.

But Camille was smart. She noticed his eyes shifting toward the door.

"What are you looking at?" she asked, turning around sharply.

"Nothing!" Darian said, but it was too late.

Camille stepped toward the hallway door and flung it open.

Layla stood there, clutching the ceramic bird to her chest, her blue dress slightly dusty from the playroom tunnel.

"You!" Camille hissed, reaching down to grab the child’s arm. "I told you to stay in your room! What is that in your hand?"

"Don't touch her!" Darian roared, lunging over the desk.

But before he could reach them, Layla did something extraordinary.

She didn't run. She didn't cry.

She looked Camille straight in the eye, raised her small hand, and pointed the ceramic bird directly at the laptop on the desk.

"Mama's song," Layla whispered.

She blew into the ceramic whistle.

A high-pitched, beautiful, warbling sound filled the room. It wasn't just a whistle; it was an acoustic trigger. The sound frequency activated the microchip inside the ceramic bird.

On Darian's desk, the laptop screen suddenly flashed a brilliant, blinding blue.

A progress bar appeared: [AUTHENTICATING PHYSICAL KEY... 100%]
