CHAPTER 3 — THE PRICE OF GREED

The first gunshot shattered the silence.

Daniel pulled Anna behind a stainless-steel cabinet just as the bullet struck the wall.

His wife, Victoria, stepped into the room wearing a black coat.

She smiled as though she were attending a dinner party.

"I knew you'd wake up eventually," she said.

"You've always been stubborn."

Daniel stared at her.

"You murdered me for money."

Victoria laughed.

"No."

"I murdered you because you refused to give me what was already mine."

Behind her stood Daniel's younger brother and his business partner.

The three conspirators slowly surrounded them.

Anna's hands shook violently.

This was all happening because of one ring.

One stolen secret.

One moment of greed.

Daniel quietly handed Anna the tiny memory card.

"If I don't make it..."

"Give this to Detective Ryan Foster."

"He already suspects everything."

Anna looked at the card.

Then at Daniel.

Then at the armed killers.

She had spent years stealing from families.

Now she had one chance to save one.

Victoria raised her pistol.

"Enough talking."

Before she could fire, the morgue alarm suddenly roared throughout the hospital.

Anna had secretly pressed the emergency panic button beneath one of the tables while hiding.

Red lights flashed everywhere.

Doors automatically locked.

Security shutters slammed shut.

The killers were trapped inside.

Within seconds, police officers and hospital security surrounded the building.

Victoria realized they had only minutes left.

She grabbed Anna by the throat.

"Give me the ring!"

Anna looked at Daniel.

Then slowly removed the ring from her pocket.

Victoria smiled.

But instead of handing it over...

Anna threw it across the room.

The ring slid beneath one of the refrigeration units.

Everyone lunged toward it at once.

Chaos erupted.

Daniel tackled his brother.

Hospital security burst through the emergency entrance.

Police officers stormed inside.

Within minutes, all three conspirators were lying face down in handcuffs.

The hidden recordings inside the ring exposed every conversation, every payment, every detail of the murder plot.

The trial became national news.

Victoria, Daniel's brother, and the corrupt business partner received life sentences.

The hospital employee who accepted the bribe was arrested.

As for Anna...

She confessed everything.

Every stolen necklace.

Every missing watch.

Every wedding ring.

The families received anonymous compensation from the money she had earned.

She served her sentence without asking for mercy.

Years later, after her release, Anna never returned to medicine.

Instead, she volunteered with grieving families, helping identify lost belongings and supporting people through the hardest days of their lives.

She could never erase what she had done.

But every act of kindness became one small payment toward a debt that could never truly be repaid.

Because greed had nearly destroyed her life...

But one impossible night inside a silent morgue taught her a lesson she would never forget.

The easiest money often carries the highest price—and eventually, every secret reaches the light.
