chapter 1

Emma had been standing on the same cobblestone street since sunrise.
She was only eight years old.
Her tiny hands trembled as she clutched the straps of her faded backpack, refusing to move even as strangers brushed past her.
Most people assumed she was waiting for her parents.
Others thought she had gotten lost.
No one knew she had been waiting for someone who had abandoned her years ago.
Every few minutes, she looked toward the end of the street with the same fragile hope.
Maybe today...
Maybe today would finally be different.
Across the road, vendors quietly watched the lonely little girl.
An elderly flower seller sighed.
"She's been here every morning this week."
"Doesn't anyone belong to her?"
Another woman shook her head.
"I tried giving her food yesterday."
"She thanked me..."
"...then asked if I'd seen a man with blue eyes driving a black SUV."
The question broke everyone's heart.
Because nobody had.
Emma wasn't hungry.
She wasn't begging.
She was waiting.
Waiting for the promise her mother whispered before taking her last breath.
"Your father will come for you one day."
Those words had become Emma's entire world.
She didn't know his name.
She didn't know where he lived.
She only remembered one thing.
A black luxury SUV.
Every day she waited.
Every day she went home disappointed.
Until this morning.
A low engine rumbled in the distance.
Heads turned.
A sleek black SUV slowly rolled onto the narrow street.
Emma froze.
Her heartbeat thundered inside her chest.
It couldn't be...
Could it?
The vehicle stopped only a few feet away.
The tinted window lowered halfway.
Everyone expected a wealthy businessman...
Instead, only a pair of cold blue eyes stared back at the little girl.
Neither of them spoke.
Seconds felt like hours.
Emma slowly reached into her backpack.
Her fingers pulled out an old photograph.
The edges were torn.
The colors had almost disappeared.
It showed a smiling young woman holding a newborn baby...
Standing beside a tall man whose face had been ripped away from the picture.
Emma lifted the photograph toward the window.
"I've been looking for you..."
she whispered.
The man's expression changed instantly.
His face lost all color.
His hands tightened around the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
For the first time in years...
Fear appeared in his eyes.
Then...
Without saying a single word...
He pressed the accelerator.
The SUV sped away.
Emma stood frozen in the middle of the street as tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
Everyone watching believed the story had just ended.
They were wrong.
Because none of them noticed what had fallen from the speeding SUV.
A small silver key...
Attached to an expensive hotel keychain.
And engraved on the back were five words that would change Emma's life forever.

"Room 1708. Don't trust anyone."
