CHAPTER 4: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO ATTENDED HER MOTHER'S FUNERAL... WASN'T BURYING HER MOTHER

Emma couldn't breathe.
She looked at the woman lying motionless on the cold concrete.
Then back at the man with the blue eyes.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"You're lying."
"My mother died two years ago."
"I buried her."
The man closed his eyes.
"I know."
Emma stepped backward.
"I stood beside her coffin."
"I threw roses into the grave."
"I watched them lower her into the ground."
The man whispered,
"That woman wasn't your mother."
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Emma's legs gave out.
"What are you saying?"
He reached into his jacket and pulled out an old leather wallet.
Hidden behind faded credit cards was a photograph.
The same woman who had just died.
Holding newborn Emma.
On the back was a handwritten date.
The day Emma was born.
And underneath...
My little miracle. — Sarah
Emma's hands shook so violently she almost dropped the picture.
"Who... buried me then?"
Before the man could answer—
A deafening explosion erupted inside the hotel.
The entire seventeenth floor burst into flames.
Windows shattered.
Fire rolled into the night sky.
People screamed as burning debris rained onto the street.
The room they had just escaped no longer existed.
Someone wasn't trying to erase evidence.
Someone was erasing history.
The man grabbed Emma.
"We have to go!"
Black SUVs surrounded the hotel from every direction.
At least a dozen armed men poured onto the sidewalks.
But something was different.
These weren't the masked killers from before.
These men wore expensive suits.
No weapons in sight.
No shouting.
No panic.
They walked with the quiet confidence of people who believed they already owned the city.
One elderly man stepped forward, holding an elegant black umbrella despite the clear night.
Silver hair.
Perfect suit.
Cold smile.
Everyone around him lowered their heads in respect.
Even the assassins.
He stopped only a few feet away from Emma.
For a long moment...
He simply looked at her.
Then he smiled.
"So..."
"You finally look just like your mother."
Emma instinctively hid behind the blue-eyed man.
The old man chuckled.
"My dear granddaughter..."
"I've searched twenty years for this moment."
Emma froze.
Granddaughter?
She stared at him in disbelief.
"My grandfather?"
The old man's smile widened.
"Of course."
"Everything your father has told you..."
"...is only half the story."
The blue-eyed man stepped forward, fury burning in his eyes.
"Stay away from her, Victor!"
The old man's expression instantly turned to ice.
"So you still blame me."
"You should."
He slowly removed a folded document from his coat and tossed it onto the pavement.
The wind carried it directly to Emma's feet.
It was a birth certificate.
She picked it up.
Father...
Daniel Carter.
Mother...
Sarah Carter.
Then her eyes reached the final line.
Date of Registration: Six Months After Emma's Official Birth Certificate Had Already Been Issued.
Emma frowned.
"Why are there two birth certificates?"
No one answered.
Instead...
Victor quietly spoke words that made Daniel's face turn completely white.
"Tell her."
"Tell your daughter why she has two identities."
Daniel remained silent.
His fists clenched.
His entire body trembled.
Victor laughed.
"You can't, can you?"
"Because if she learns the truth..."
"...she'll discover she isn't the child they were hunting."
A long silence filled the street.
Emma looked from one man to the other.
"What truth?"
Victor took one slow step closer.
Then he whispered:
"The real Emma Carter..."
"...died the night she was born."
Emma's heart stopped.
If she wasn't Emma Carter...
Then who was she?
