CHAPTER 5: SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST... AND NOW THEY WOULD KILL TO KEEP THE SECRET BURIED

"The real Emma Carter... died the night she was born."

The words echoed through the silent street like a death sentence.

Emma felt her knees weaken.

"No..."

She stared at the old man.

"No, you're lying."

Victor didn't blink.

"I wish I were."

Daniel stepped between them.

"Don't listen to him."

Victor laughed quietly.

"You've been lying to her for eight years."

"You don't get to call me the liar."

Emma looked at Daniel with tears filling her eyes.

"Dad..."

The word slipped out before she realized it.

"...is it true?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

His silence said everything.

Emma's heart shattered.

"If I'm not Emma..."

"...then who am I?"

Victor slowly removed another envelope from inside his coat.

"This belongs to you."

Daniel lunged forward.

"NO!"

But it was too late.

Victor tossed the envelope into the air.

The wind carried it directly to Emma's feet.

Inside was a newspaper clipping dated eight years earlier.

The headline read:

BILLIONAIRE COUPLE AND THEIR NEWBORN DAUGHTER DIE IN MYSTERIOUS HOSPITAL FIRE.

Emma's hands trembled.

The article included a photograph.

A smiling couple.

A newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.

The baby's tiny silver bracelet was clearly visible.

Emma froze.

She slowly looked down at the bracelet on her own wrist.

The exact same bracelet.

Same engraving.

Same serial number.

Impossible.

Daniel's face turned pale.

Emma whispered,

"This... is mine."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

"You weren't abandoned."

"You were stolen."

The world stopped.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"I SAVED HER!"

Victor's voice exploded across the street.

"You kidnapped her!"

"It was the only way!"

Daniel shouted back.

"They murdered her parents!"

"They burned the hospital to erase every witness!"

"They were coming for the baby next!"

"They would have killed her too!"

Emma couldn't tell who was telling the truth anymore.

Saved?

Kidnapped?

Which one was real?

Suddenly...

Police sirens echoed from every direction.

Blue and red lights flooded the street.

Dozens of officers surrounded the hotel.

Emma felt hope for the first time.

"We're safe."

But Daniel's face filled with terror.

"No..."

"Not them."

Police officers rushed toward the group with weapons drawn.

One detective stepped forward.

"Daniel Carter!"

"You're under arrest for the kidnapping and murder of Emma Carter eight years ago!"

Emma gasped.

"Murder?"

Daniel slowly raised his hands.

He never resisted.

Instead...

He looked only at Emma.

"I promised your mother I'd keep you alive."

"I'm sorry I couldn't tell you sooner."

The officers shoved him into a police car.

Emma screamed.

"Dad!"

He smiled through the window.

The same gentle smile she remembered from every bedtime story.

Then the car door slammed shut.

Victor placed a comforting hand on Emma's shoulder.

"Come with me."

"I'll tell you everything."

Emma hesitated.

For one brief moment...

Victor looked like the only person she had left.

She climbed into his limousine.

The door closed.

As the convoy disappeared into the night...

No one noticed Daniel quietly slipping a folded note beneath the back seat of the police car before the officers searched him.

Twenty minutes later...

Inside Victor's enormous mansion...

Emma wandered into a luxurious bedroom prepared especially for her.

New clothes.

New toys.

A giant bed.

Everything a little girl could dream of.

Yet something felt terribly wrong.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

Then noticed a small piece of paper sticking out from inside her jacket pocket.

Confused, she unfolded it.

Daniel's handwriting.

Only one sentence.

"If you're reading this... don't eat or drink anything Victor gives you."

Emma's breathing stopped.

At that exact second...

The bedroom door slowly opened.

A maid entered carrying a silver tray.

On it sat a warm glass of milk.

She smiled kindly.

"Mr. Victor asked me to bring this."

Emma looked at the glass.

Then at Daniel's warning.

Her tiny fingers began to shake.

The maid smiled again.

But this time...

Emma noticed something horrifying.

The woman wasn't wearing a wedding ring.

She was wearing the exact same silver ring as one of the masked assassins from the hotel.

The maid quietly locked the bedroom door behind her.

"You've had a very long day, sweetheart."

"Drink your milk..."

May you like

"...and you'll never have to remember any of this again."

To be continued...
