CHAPTER 4 – The Basement Where Every Secret Was Buried

The guards grabbed Lily before she could run.
She screamed for help, but the mansion swallowed every sound.
The heavy basement door slammed shut behind her with a deafening BOOM.
Cold.
Dark.
Silent.
The room smelled of damp stone and forgotten memories.
A single light bulb flickered above her head.
Mrs. Ashford walked down the stairs, holding the silver key Lily had found inside the hidden box.
"You should never have opened that floor," she said coldly.
Lily wiped away her tears.
"My father... who was he?"
Mrs. Ashford laughed.
"The only mistake my husband ever made."
She unlocked an old steel cabinet hidden behind a wall.
Inside were dozens of dusty folders.
Every folder had the same family crest.
Every folder belonged to the Ashford estate.
But one folder was different.
Across the front, written in bold red letters, were the words:
LEGAL HEIR – LILLIAN ROSE ASHFORD
Lily's heart pounded.
Mrs. Ashford tossed the folder into the fireplace.
Within seconds, flames consumed years of evidence.
"You'll never prove who you are now."
Lily watched helplessly as photographs, birth records, and legal documents turned to ash.
Mrs. Ashford smiled triumphantly.
"The world already believes your parents died poor."
"The Ashford fortune belongs to me."
Then she leaned close enough for Lily to hear every word.
"I arranged the car crash that killed your father."
Silence.
Lily felt the world stop spinning.
Her knees gave out.
"No..."
Mrs. Ashford whispered one final sentence before leaving.
"And your mother wasn't supposed to survive either."
The basement door slammed shut again.
Lily collapsed onto the cold floor, believing all hope was gone.
But then...
A faint metallic sound echoed from the burning fireplace.
CLINK...
Hidden beneath the burning documents...
Something made of solid gold had survived the fire.
Lily reached into the ashes and pulled out a scorched golden signet ring.
Inside the band was a tiny engraving:
"Only the true heir can open Vault 7."
At that exact moment...
May you like
Someone outside the mansion had already recognized the ring.
And they were coming to claim the heir everyone believed had died eleven years ago...
