CHAPTER 8: "The Woman He Had Been Searching for Was Standing Right in Front of Him..."

The next morning...
Ethan and Grace stood outside an abandoned storage facility on the edge of the city.
Storage Unit 17.
The metal key trembled in Ethan's hand.
With a loud click...
The rusted door slowly rolled open.
Dust filled the air.
Inside were dozens of sealed boxes.
Family photo albums.
Medical files.
Old videotapes.
Children's toys.
And in the center of the room...
A small pink backpack covered in faded butterflies.
Grace collapsed to her knees.
She recognized it immediately.
"I bought this for Emily on her fourth birthday..."
Her hands shook as she hugged the backpack to her chest.
Ethan quietly searched through another box.
Then he found a videotape labeled:
"If Anything Happens to Me..."
Hours later, the tape played on an old projector.
Daniel Caldwell appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
His face was bruised.
He knew he was running out of time.
"If you're watching this..."
"...Richard has already tried to erase our family."
He looked directly into the camera.
"Grace..."
"I'm sorry."
"I couldn't save everyone."
Tears streamed down Grace's face.
Daniel continued.
"Ethan..."
"You were never my blood."
"But you were my son from the first day I held you."
"And Emily..."
"If she's alive..."
"Never let her blame herself."
Then Daniel reached for a folder.
Inside was a photograph.
The image showed a little girl holding a teddy bear beside Richard Langley.
On the back was written one sentence.
'New identity approved: Olivia Harper.'
Grace gasped.
"Olivia..."
Ethan immediately searched the government database using the information in the files.
Within minutes...
One record appeared.
Olivia Harper.
Age: 29.
Occupation: Pediatric Nurse.
City: Boston.
Status: Single.
No criminal record.
No connection to the Langley family.
She had spent her entire life believing she was an orphan adopted by a wealthy businessman.
She had no idea...
That man had been Richard Langley.
Grace couldn't stop crying.
"My little girl became a nurse..."
"Just like Daniel always dreamed."
Ethan smiled through tears.
"We found her, Mom."
But before they could leave...
Another envelope slipped from the bottom of the box.
Unlike everything else...
It had been opened recently.
Ethan frowned.
Inside was a single photograph taken only three weeks earlier.
Someone had secretly photographed Olivia leaving the children's hospital.
Written across the back in fresh black ink were six chilling words.
"She still knows nothing... for now."
Silence filled the storage unit.
Someone had been watching Emily—now Olivia.
Not twenty-five years ago.
Not ten years ago.
Three weeks ago.
That meant Richard's network was still active.
And they knew exactly where she was.
Just then, Ethan's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
A distorted voice whispered:
"You finally found your sister..."
A long pause followed.
Then came the words that made Ethan's blood run cold.
"Now race us to Boston... if you want to meet her alive."
The line went dead.
Grace looked at Ethan with terrified eyes.
He slowly closed his phone and grabbed the family photograph.
For twenty-five years...
They had searched for Emily.
May you like
Now they had only hours...
Before they might lose her forever.
