Chapter 2 - THE AMUSH AT DAWNAt 8:30 AM, Victoria Vance stepped out of her luxury sedan in front of the flagship branch of Vale Financial in downtown Chicago. She held a iced macchiato in one hand and her designer handbag in the other, humming softly to herself.

Today was the day. By 9:00 AM, the fraudulent wire transfer from the offshore shell company would clear. Her uncle, Victor Vance, would finalize the seizure of Sarah Bennett’s apartment building, clear the lot for the commercial transit corridor, and net a cool $4.2 million. Victoria’s personal kickback for altering the bank's digital payment logs was $350,000.

She smoothed down her tailored suit and strode through the glass doors of the bank lobby, expecting the quiet hum of her morning staff.

Instead, she stepped into absolute, suffocating silence.

The lobby was not filled with early-morning patrons. It was lined with eight men in dark suits, each wearing high-visibility credentials from the Banking Oversight Commission and the Department of Financial Crime Enforcement.

Sitting in a high-backed leather chair right in the center of the lobby—his hands rested comfortably over the silver handle of his oak cane—was the old man with the dark coat.

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks. Her coffee cup slipped from her fingers, shattering on the cold marble floor and splattering dark liquid across her polished heels.

"Victoria Vance," Arthur Vale said calmly, his deep voice carrying through the immense room like a funeral knell. "You're late."

"Who... who the hell are you?" Victoria sneered, trying desperately to cover her sudden spike of panic with institutional arrogance. "This is a private corporate facility. Security! Have this old man removed immediately!"

None of the security guards moved. In fact, her head of branch security stood at attention behind Arthur’s chair, his head bowed.

"Security won't help you today, Ms. Vance," Arthur said gently, leaning forward on his cane. "You see, when you altered the internal audit logs for Account #4092—belonging to one Sarah Bennett—you used administrative override code 99-Alpha."

Victoria’s face drained of every drop of color. "How do you... who told you that?"

"Code 99-Alpha is reserved exclusively for executive officers of the parent company," Arthur continued smoothly. "It is monitored live by my private server network. You didn't just commit bank fraud, Victoria. You committed wire fraud, bank fraud, grand larceny, and breach of fiduciary trust using my system."

"Your system?" she gasped, her voice shrinking to a high-pitched squeak.

Arthur stood up, his cane clicking once, loud as a gun crack, against the stone floor.

"My name is Arthur Vale. I founded this bank thirty-five years ago. I own ninety-two percent of its voting shares. And you, little girl, just signed your own arrest warrant in my lobby."
