Chapter 1: The Golden Cage and The Silent Genius

The grand ballroom of the Sterling Estate was a suffocating display of stolen wealth. Chandelier light shattered against diamond necklaces, and laughter bubbled over crystal flutes of champagne. At the center of it all stood Arthur Sterling, a billionaire whose smile never quite reached his eyes. To celebrate his company’s anniversary, Arthur had wheeled out his pride and joy: a towering, two-ton golden vault, rumored to be entirely unpickable.
"Ten thousand dollars," Arthur smirked, his voice booming through the microphone, echoing across the crowded room. "I’ll give ten thousand dollars to anyone—or anything—that can even scratch the surface of this beauty."
The crowd burst into sycophantic laughter. Phones rose instantly, screens glowing as guests began livestreaming the billionaire’s arrogant display.
Then, the sea of tailored tuxedos parted.
Walking toward the stage was a boy. He couldn't have been more than eight years old. He wore a slightly oversized, faded brown tweed jacket that looked a decade out of style, but his posture was strangely calm. He didn't look at the flashing cameras. He didn't look at the glittering crowd. He simply walked straight toward the safe.
The laughter in the room began to weaken. The atmosphere shifted from mocking amusement to tense curiosity.
Arthur’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, looking down at the child like an amusing insect. "What's the matter, kid? Want to buy some candy?"
The boy said nothing. The camera phones pushed in close as he placed his small, pale fingers onto the cold, gold-plated metal. The way his hands moved wasn't random; it was intimate. Like he recognized it. Like he was greeting an old friend.
He leaned his small ear against the lock, closing his eyes, listening to the silent gears inside. Then, he turned his head slightly toward the billionaire.

"Are you sure?" the boy whispered.
Murmurs rippled through the high-society guests. Arthur’s face tightened. He laughed once, a sharp, nervous sound. "Open it, kid. Show us what you got."
