Chapter 1: The Trap of Silence

The yard was dead silent. Hundreds of eyes were glued to the confrontation between Victor Carterâa man who had ruled Blackwood Penitentiary through sheer terrorâand David, the soft-spoken new guard.
Victorâs hand was clenched tightly around Davidâs uniform. He sneered, expecting to see fear, or at least a desperate, sloppy swing. He wanted David to strike first. That was the game. If the guard snapped, Victorâs lawyers would call it self-defense, and the "King" would remain untouched.
"What's wrong, little man?" Victor whispered, his breath hot against Davidâs face. "Your eyes are blank. Are you crying inside?"
But David didnât cry. He didn't even blink.
In less than a fraction of a second, Davidâs posture shifted. The gentle, compliant guard vanished. With a movement so fluid and lightning-fast it looked like a blur, David didn't strike back with a punch. Instead, his hand shot up, clamping onto Victor's wrist with the force of a hydraulic press.
Before Victor could register the pain, David stepped into the brute's space, utilized Victorâs own forward momentum, and executed a flawless, devastating military-grade takedown.
BOOM.
The sound of Victorâs massive 250-pound frame hitting the concrete echoed across the courtyard. The air rushed out of Victorâs lungs in a pathetic gasp. But David wasn't done. In one seamless motion, he transitioned into a joint lock, pinning Victorâs arm behind his back at an angle that screamed one thing: Move, and it snaps.
David didn't yell. He didn't look angry. He leaned down, his face inches from Victor's ear, and spoke in that same calm, chillingly polite voice:

"Mr. Carter, assault on staff is an additional five years. I suggest you stay down."
The yard was paralyzed. The "master" of the prison was face-down in the dirt, completely immobilized by the man they thought was a coward. But the real shockwave hit when the veteran guards rushed in. Instead of cheering, they looked at David not with admiration... but with absolute, pale-faced horror.
