Chapter 3 — “She Isn't Dead…” The CEO Found a Hidden Security Video—Then the Hospital's Cameras Went Black

James had spent twenty years building a reputation for seeing lies before everyone else did.

Bad investments.

Fake partnerships.

Forged contracts.

He could usually tell within minutes.

But nothing had prepared him for a six-year-old girl walking into his office with trembling hands...

holding a hospital access card that read:

DON'T TRUST HOLLOWAY.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

James slowly took the card.

"Lucy..."

"Where did you get this?"

"The nurse dropped it."

"She looked scared."

"She wanted to tell me something."

James turned the card over again.

No name.

No department.

Only the magnetic strip and those four handwritten words.

Someone inside City General was trying to help them.

Someone else was trying very hard to stop it.

Inside Dr. Holloway's office...

the hospital administrator remained unusually calm.

Almost...

too calm.

"Mr. Crawford," Holloway said, "I'm afraid you've become emotionally involved."

James slipped the card into his coat pocket without letting the doctor notice.

"Maybe."

"But emotional people don't usually ask difficult questions."

Holloway folded his hands.

"What exactly are you suggesting?"

"I'm suggesting your story doesn't add up."

"You claim Grace Chen died this morning."

"You can't explain where."

"You can't explain how."

"You can't explain why her daughter wasn't notified."

"And somehow..."

James leaned closer.

"...every employee who hears Grace's name suddenly looks terrified."

The doctor's jaw tightened.

"I think this meeting is over."

"So do I."

James stood.

"But this investigation is just beginning."

As they walked toward the elevators...

Lucy whispered,

"I don't like that man."

James looked down.

"Why?"

"He smiled with his mouth."

"But not with his eyes."

James stopped walking.

Children often noticed things adults ignored.

"Did your mommy ever talk about him?"

Lucy thought for a moment.

"One time."

"What did she say?"

"She told me..."

Lucy lowered her voice exactly the way Grace must have.

"'If I ever tell you to stay with Mrs. Peterson and never come to the hospital...'"

She hesitated.

"...'promise you'll listen.'"

James felt cold again.

"Did she say why?"

Lucy slowly shook her head.

"She looked scared."

Before leaving the hospital...

James walked past the security office.

A young security guard sat behind six large monitors.

James showed his business card.

"I'm James Crawford."

"I need to review yesterday's security footage involving Nurse Grace Chen."

The guard immediately looked uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"I don't have authorization."

James reached into his wallet.

Not for money.

For another card.

A member of City General's Board of Technology Advisors.

The result of Crawford Industries' massive partnership.

The guard swallowed.

"I... suppose I can at least check if the footage exists."

He typed quickly.

His face suddenly changed.

"What is it?"

"The files..."

"They're gone."

James frowned.

"What do you mean, gone?"

"Yesterday's emergency department footage..."

"The parking garage..."

"The employee entrance..."

"Every camera between six in the morning and eight-thirty..."

He stared at the screen.

"...has been deleted."

Deleted.

Not corrupted.

Not damaged.

Deleted.

Hospitals archived security footage automatically.

Someone had intentionally erased it.

"Who has permission to do that?"

The guard answered immediately.

"Only three people."

"The hospital director."

"The IT security administrator."

"And..."

He stopped.

"And who?"

"...Dr. Holloway."

James thanked him and walked away without another word.

Someone wasn't covering up an accident.

Someone was destroying evidence.

Outside...

the snowstorm had become heavier.

Traffic barely moved.

James opened the SUV door for Lucy.

Just as she climbed inside...

she suddenly froze.

Her eyes widened.

"Mr. James..."

"What?"

She pointed across the street.

"There."

Standing beneath a flickering streetlight...

was the same frightened nurse.

She wore a gray coat over blue scrubs.

She looked around repeatedly.

Then she quickly raised one shaking hand.

Not waving.

Signaling.

James crossed the street.

The nurse spoke before he reached her.

"You don't have much time."

"My name is Nancy."

"I worked with Grace."

"What happened to her?"

Nancy's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

"But I know she never died."

James felt his pulse race.

"What?"

"I saw her yesterday morning."

"She was alive."

"Very much alive."

James stepped closer.

"Then where is she?"

Nancy looked toward the hospital building.

Fear spread across her face.

"I can't say it here."

"They're watching."

"Who?"

Before she could answer...

a black SUV suddenly accelerated around the corner.

Far too fast.

Its headlights locked onto Nancy.

James reacted instantly.

"Nancy!"

The vehicle swerved onto the sidewalk.

Nancy screamed.

James lunged forward...

throwing her toward a snowbank.

The SUV missed her by inches.

Instead...

it smashed into a newspaper stand before speeding away into traffic.

People screamed.

Drivers slammed their brakes.

Snow exploded into the air.

Lucy cried from inside James' vehicle.

James helped Nancy to her feet.

She was shaking uncontrollably.

"They're trying to kill me."

"They know I talked."

James stared after the disappearing SUV.

No license plate.

Covered by snow.

Professional.

Planned.

Whoever wanted Grace Chen to disappear...

had just tried to eliminate the only witness.

Minutes later...

Police officers arrived.

Paramedics checked Nancy.

Everyone called it a traffic accident.

James didn't believe that for one second.

Neither did Nancy.

As the ambulance doors closed...

she grabbed James's sleeve.

With the last strength she had...

she slipped something into his hand.

A tiny silver USB drive.

Hidden inside a nurse's ID badge.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Grace copied everything..."

"...before they found out."

James stared at the drive.

"What is on this?"

Nancy's eyes filled with terror.

"The truth."

"The reason they made her disappear."

Then she whispered six words that made James's blood run cold.

"Don't open it at the hospital."

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

James stood in the falling snow, the tiny USB drive hidden tightly in his hand.

Across the street...

high above them...

inside the top-floor window of City General Hospital...

Dr. Richard Holloway silently watched everything unfold.

And for the first time...

the CEO realized he wasn't investigating a missing nurse anymore.

He had just stepped into a conspiracy powerful enough to erase evidence...

silence witnesses...

and perhaps...

May you like

murder anyone who got too close to the truth.

End of Chapter 3...
