Chapter 5 — “Take the Child.” The Armed Men Entered the CEO’s Building—But They Never Expected What James Did Next

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Professional.

James didn't panic.

For years, people assumed his greatest strength was building billion-dollar companies.

They were wrong.

Before founding Crawford Industries...

Before magazine covers...

Before Wall Street...

James Crawford had served eight years in U.S. Army Intelligence.

He rarely spoke about that part of his life.

Almost nobody inside his company even knew.

He preferred it that way.

But the habits never disappeared.

When the lights went out...

His instincts came back.

Immediately.

He picked up Lucy before she could wake.

She stirred slightly.

"...Mommy?"

James whispered,

"It's okay."

"I've got you."

Still half asleep, she wrapped one tiny arm around his neck.

He carried her silently through his dark office.

Instead of heading toward the elevator...

He walked toward a large bookshelf.

Most executives saw expensive books.

James saw something else.

He pressed three hidden points behind the shelves.

A quiet click echoed.

The entire bookcase slowly slid aside.

Behind it...

A concealed security corridor.

It had been built years earlier after an attempted kidnapping of a foreign investor visiting the building.

Very few people knew it existed.

Lucy blinked awake.

"Mr. James..."

"Are we playing hide-and-seek?"

He forced a smile.

"For a little while."

She nodded.

Children accepted impossible situations surprisingly well when they trusted the adult beside them.

Behind them...

The executive office door exploded open.

Flashlights swept across the room.

Four men entered.

Black tactical clothing.

Gloves.

Masks.

No company logos.

No police markings.

One of them spoke into an earpiece.

"The office is empty."

Another answered immediately.

"They couldn't have gone far."

"Find the girl."

Not James.

The girl.

That terrified him more than anything.

Inside the hidden passage...

James quietly closed the steel door.

The corridor descended beneath the building.

Emergency lights glowed faintly along the walls.

Lucy whispered,

"Are bad people here?"

James didn't lie.

"Yes."

"Will they hurt us?"

He looked into her frightened eyes.

"Not while I'm with you."

She believed him completely.

The corridor ended inside a secure underground garage.

James placed Lucy inside an armored SUV reserved for executive emergencies.

Before starting the engine...

He finally looked at the silver USB again.

The drive contained hundreds of files.

There hadn't been time to examine them.

He plugged it into the vehicle's encrypted computer.

A directory appeared.

PATIENT FILES

FINANCIAL RECORDS

VIDEO EVIDENCE

One folder stood out.

PROJECT PHOENIX

James clicked.

Dozens of classified documents appeared.

Medical contracts.

Government grant proposals.

Confidential research reports.

One sentence immediately caught his attention.

Phase Three requires twenty additional "unclaimed" patients before federal inspection.

James stared at the screen.

Unclaimed patients?

These weren't research volunteers.

They were human beings.

Another file opened automatically.

A payment ledger.

Millions of dollars.

Transferred between shell companies.

Private laboratories.

Medical suppliers.

And...

Crawford Industries.

James's face went pale.

Not because his company had received money.

Because someone inside the company had approved every transaction using his digital authorization.

Authorization...

He had never given.

Someone had forged his identity.

Suddenly—

Lucy's small voice interrupted him.

"Mr. James..."

He looked over.

She was staring at an old family photograph that had slipped from inside her backpack.

Grace.

Lucy.

Her father in firefighter uniform.

James smiled sadly.

"Your daddy looked proud."

Lucy nodded.

"Mommy always says heroes don't wear capes."

"They come home tired."

James's smile disappeared.

"Did your mommy ever say anything else?"

Lucy thought carefully.

"One night..."

"We were making cookies."

"Mommy said..."

She repeated the words exactly.

"'If anything happens to me...'"

"'Take Mr. Buttons.'"

James frowned.

"The rabbit?"

Lucy hugged the stuffed toy.

"She said..."

"'Never let anyone take him.'"

James slowly looked at the old rabbit.

Worn fabric.

Several hand-stitched repairs.

One ear sewn back together.

Almost too carefully.

He reached for it gently.

"Lucy..."

"May I see Mr. Buttons?"

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

James carefully felt the toy.

Near the stomach...

Something hard.

Not stuffing.

Something hidden.

His pulse quickened.

He examined the stitching.

Fresh thread.

Different from the rest.

Grace hadn't repaired the rabbit.

She had hidden something inside it.

Before James could investigate—

His encrypted phone rang.

Only one person had this number.

His head of corporate security.

Former FBI agent Marcus Doyle.

James answered immediately.

"Marcus."

The man's voice was unusually tense.

"Sir..."

"You need to listen carefully."

"Our internal security servers have been breached."

"I know."

"No."

Marcus interrupted.

"You don't understand."

"It's not just tonight."

"I've traced unauthorized access going back almost eighteen months."

James tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"From where?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"...inside your executive office."

James's heart skipped.

Impossible.

Only four people had unrestricted access.

James.

Marcus.

His executive assistant...

And his Chief Financial Officer.

Daniel Brooks.

The same man appearing beside Holloway in Grace's hidden recording.

Marcus continued.

"I also found something else."

"What?"

"Daniel Brooks resigned."

James blinked.

"What?"

"He cleared out his office."

"Forty-three minutes ago."

"He vanished."

Across the city...

Inside an abandoned warehouse...

Daniel Brooks watched a live security feed.

The image showed James's armored SUV leaving the underground garage.

Daniel smiled.

"So..."

"The old soldier figured it out."

Dr. Holloway stepped beside him.

"What about the child?"

Daniel's smile slowly widened.

"We don't need to chase her anymore."

Holloway frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel pointed toward the stuffed rabbit visible through the SUV window.

"Grace hid it exactly where we hoped she would."

"You let her keep the rabbit?"

Daniel nodded.

"Of course."

"People always protect what they believe is valuable."

He calmly pressed a button on a small remote control.

A tiny green light...

hidden deep inside Mr. Buttons...

began blinking silently.

Grace had hidden evidence inside the toy.

But without realizing it...

Someone else had hidden something too.

A military-grade tracking device.

Daniel smiled again.

"They're leading us exactly where we want them."

Far across the snowy city...

James drove into the night.

Completely unaware...

that every mile he traveled...

May you like

brought the hunters one step closer.

End of Chapter 5...
