Chapter 4 — “If You're Watching This… I May Already Be Gone.” The CEO Opened the USB—Then the Nurse Appeared on the Screen

James didn't drive home.

He didn't return to his office.

And he certainly didn't trust anyone connected to City General Hospital.

Instead, he took Lucy to the only place he believed was still beyond the hospital's reach—Crawford Industries' private executive headquarters.

The top floor had its own security system.

Its own servers.

Its own encrypted network.

No outside access.

No hospital IT department.

No one except a handful of trusted employees even knew the room existed.

Lucy had finally fallen asleep on the leather sofa, still clutching Mr. Buttons tightly against her chest.

For the first time since they'd met, she looked like what she truly was—

A little girl.

Not a missing nurse's daughter.

Not the center of a growing conspiracy.

Just a child who had cried herself to sleep waiting for her mother.

James quietly covered her with his own coat.

Then he looked down at the silver USB drive.

Nancy's final words echoed in his mind.

"Don't open it at the hospital."

He inserted the drive into an isolated computer that had never been connected to the internet.

The screen remained black.

Then...

One single video file appeared.

GRACE_IF_ANYTHING_HAPPENS_TO_ME.mp4

James clicked it.

The screen flickered.

Grace Chen appeared.

She was still wearing blue scrubs.

Her hair was tied back.

Dark circles surrounded her exhausted eyes.

Behind her was an empty hospital supply room.

She looked over her shoulder twice before speaking.

"If you're watching this..."

She took a shaky breath.

"...then I was right."

"They found out."

James leaned closer.

Grace looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Grace Chen."

"I've worked at City General for eight years."

"I love my daughter more than my own life."

"If I disappear..."

"Please don't let Lucy believe I abandoned her."

James glanced toward the sleeping child.

His chest tightened.

Grace continued.

"Three months ago..."

"I accidentally witnessed something I was never supposed to see."

Her hands began trembling.

"A patient was declared dead."

"But he wasn't dead."

James frowned.

Grace swallowed hard.

"I watched doctors disconnect life support..."

"...before the family had even arrived."

"There was no medical reason."

"It wasn't a mistake."

"It was an order."

She looked toward the hallway again.

"I copied documents."

"Patient records."

"Financial transfers."

"Internal emails."

"They've been hiding deaths."

James's breathing slowed.

This wasn't medical negligence.

This sounded like organized murder.

Grace continued.

"Every death generated insurance payments."

"Research grants."

"Private contracts."

"They made millions."

"I reported it."

"I thought someone would investigate."

Instead...

She laughed bitterly through tears.

"They investigated me."

James looked at the folder beside the video.

There were hundreds of encrypted files.

Medical records.

Payment logs.

Internal communications.

Security reports.

Someone had been collecting evidence for months.

Grace spoke again.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Please..."

"Protect Lucy."

"Don't let Holloway near her."

The video suddenly froze.

Static covered the screen.

Then another face appeared.

Not Grace.

Someone else.

A man.

James immediately recognized him.

His own Chief Financial Officer.

Daniel Brooks.

James stared at the screen in disbelief.

Daniel was speaking with Dr. Holloway inside what looked like a hospital conference room.

The hidden camera had captured only part of the conversation.

But it was enough.

"...Crawford Industries will never know," Daniel said quietly.

Holloway smiled.

"They're funding half the project."

"They'll believe whatever we tell them."

James's heart nearly stopped.

His own company...

was somehow connected.

Not by accident.

Someone inside Crawford Industries had been working with Holloway all along.

The recording ended abruptly.

Silence filled the room.

James sat perfectly still.

For nearly a minute.

His most trusted executive...

The man who had worked beside him for twelve years...

Appeared to be involved.

Then...

His secure office phone rang.

Impossible.

Almost no one had the number.

James answered.

No one spoke.

Only slow breathing.

Then a distorted male voice whispered:

"You've already watched the video."

James said nothing.

"We know where the little girl is."

His blood turned cold.

"If you want Lucy to live..."

"Destroy the USB."

The line went dead.

At that exact moment—

Every light inside the executive floor suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the office.

Emergency generators failed.

Security monitors went black.

Somewhere in the hallway...

A door slowly creaked open.

Then came the unmistakable sound...

of heavy footsteps approaching.

Not one person.

Several.

James quietly unplugged the USB.

Slipped it into his pocket.

Then looked toward the sleeping little girl.

She was still asleep.

Completely unaware.

Whoever had entered the building...

hadn't come for the evidence.

They had come...

May you like

For Lucy.

End of Chapter 4...
