Chapter 2: The Man on the Phone

Daniel didn't answer.
The screen kept glowing.
RICHARD HALE CALLING.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, the phone stopped vibrating.
Sarah stared at it as though it were a loaded weapon.
"He never gives up," she whispered.
Daniel slowly turned the phone face down on the table.
"You know him personally?"
Sarah's eyes filled with panic.
"You do."
Daniel nodded.
"He's been one of my company's biggest investors for almost four years."
Sarah's face went pale.
"Oh God..."
"What?"
"You can't help us."
"Why?"
"Because he'll destroy you."
Daniel almost smiled.
"I've been threatened before."
"You don't understand."
"No," Sarah said, shaking her head. "You really don't."
Lily had fallen asleep against her mother's shoulder, still clutching her old teddy bear.
Daniel quietly slid his untouched sandwich toward Sarah.
She hesitated.
Then finally accepted it.
Not because she wanted food.
Because she knew refusing would only waste it.
She broke the sandwich into tiny pieces.
Half for herself.
Half wrapped carefully in a napkin.
"For later," she said softly.
Daniel recognized the habit.
People who had known hunger never stopped preparing for the next one.
Outside the café windows, rain began falling over King's Cross.
Passengers hurried beneath umbrellas.
Announcements echoed through the station.
Life continued.
As if no one inside knew that a frightened mother and her little girl were running for their lives.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Tell me everything."
Sarah looked around first.
Every stranger suddenly felt dangerous.
Every man in a dark coat made her flinch.
Then she spoke.
"When I met Richard..."
"...everyone said I was lucky."
"He donated to children's hospitals."
"He appeared on television."
"He funded scholarships."
"He smiled for cameras."
Daniel listened without interrupting.
"He was charming."
"Patient."
"He remembered birthdays."
"He sent flowers."
"My parents adored him."
She laughed bitterly.
"So did everyone else."
"When did it change?"
"The day after our wedding."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"He told me marriage meant ownership."
The words landed like ice.
"He decided what I wore."
"Who I spoke to."
"When I could leave the house."
"He checked my phone."
"My emails."
"My bank account."
"My medical appointments."
She stopped.
Her breathing grew uneven.
Daniel quietly waited.
Then...
"He apologized every time."
"He cried."
"He bought gifts."
"He promised it would never happen again."
"And then..."
She looked at Lily.
"...it became worse."
Daniel's fists slowly tightened beneath the table.
"I should have seen something."
Sarah looked confused.
"You couldn't."
"I've spent years sitting across boardroom tables from him."
"We shook hands."
"We celebrated contracts."
"I trusted him."
"He fooled everyone."
Sarah whispered.
"No."
"He fooled the world."
Daniel's phone buzzed again.
This time it wasn't Richard.
It was Olivia.
He answered.
"We've delayed the meeting one hour," she said quickly.
"The chairman isn't happy."
"I'll explain later."
"You need to know something first."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"Richard Hale just arrived."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"His private jet landed early."
"He's already in the building."
Sarah's blood seemed to drain from her face.
"What did she say?"
Daniel looked at her.
"He came early."
Sarah immediately stood.
"We have to go."
She grabbed Lily.
The little girl woke in confusion.
"Mommy?"
"No questions, sweetheart."
"We're leaving."
Daniel stood with them.
"I'll walk you out."
"No."
"He knows your face."
"So?"
"If he sees us together..."
"He'll know someone helped us."
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"Then let him."
Sarah stared at him.
"You don't know what you're saying."
Before anyone could move...
A security guard entered the café.
He looked around the room.
Then walked directly toward their table.
"Excuse me..."
Sarah instinctively stepped in front of Lily.
The guard smiled politely.
"Mr. Morrison?"
Daniel nodded.
"Someone is looking for you."
"Who?"
The guard checked his earpiece.
"Mr. Richard Hale."
Silence.
The café suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Too exposed.
Daniel glanced toward the station entrance.
A tall man in a charcoal overcoat had just stepped inside.
Perfect posture.
Perfect smile.
Silver cufflinks.
Expensive watch.
Calm eyes.
To everyone else...
He looked like success itself.
To Sarah...
He looked like death.
She grabbed Daniel's arm so tightly her fingers shook.
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
"Don't let him see Lily."
Daniel looked back.
Richard had not noticed them.
Not yet.
Then Lily did something no one expected.
Still half-asleep, she peeked over her mother's shoulder...
Looked straight across the crowded station...
And whispered in a terrified voice that froze Daniel's blood.
"Mommy..."
"...Daddy found us."
Richard Hale slowly turned his head.
His eyes locked onto the little girl.
And then...
He smiled.
Not the smile he gave reporters.
Not the smile investors trusted.
This smile held no warmth.
Only certainty.
Because he knew one thing.
May you like
His wife and daughter had nowhere left to run.
