Chapter 5: The File That Was Never Supposed to Exist

Daniel didn't move.

The unknown caller had already hung up.

His phone screen went black.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Rain continued tapping against the giant glass roof of King's Cross Station.

Passengers hurried past without realizing that only a few feet away, three ordinary-looking people had just become the center of something far more dangerous than a domestic dispute.

Sarah finally broke the silence.

"What did he say?"

Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket.

"He told me not to plug either device into a computer."

Sarah stared at him.

"Who was it?"

"I don't know."

"But whoever he is..."

"...he knows exactly what we're carrying."

Daniel looked around the station.

A strange feeling settled over him.

Not panic.

Instinct.

The same instinct that had helped him build one of Europe's most respected cybersecurity companies.

Someone was watching.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

His eyes swept across the crowd.

A businessman pretending to read a newspaper.

A young woman sitting alone with a laptop.

A cleaner pushing a cart.

A delivery driver talking on his phone.

Nothing looked unusual.

Which made it even worse.

Because the best surveillance never looked unusual.

"We're leaving," Daniel said.

Sarah nodded immediately.

"But where?"

"Not Glasgow."

Her face fell.

"My sister..."

"If Richard expected you to go there, it's the first place he'll check."

Sarah knew he was right.

She hated that he was right.

Lily quietly took Daniel's hand.

"Are we hiding?"

Daniel looked into her innocent eyes.

"For a little while."

She nodded with surprising seriousness.

"My mommy says hiding is okay..."

"...if you're hiding until it's safe."

The words hit Daniel harder than any boardroom argument ever had.

No four-year-old should know the difference between hiding and feeling safe.

Instead of walking toward the taxi rank, Daniel led them through a staff corridor that connected to a quieter exit on the east side of the station.

He knew the route from years of business travel.

Within minutes, they reached a small underground parking garage.

Daniel unlocked a dark gray company vehicle.

Sarah hesitated.

"I don't even know why you're helping us."

Daniel looked at her honestly.

"I'm beginning to think I'm helping myself too."

She frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He looked down at the flash drive in his hand.

"If Richard is willing to chase his own daughter across the country..."

"...whatever's on this belongs to something much bigger than your marriage."

Half an hour later...

The car disappeared into central London traffic.

No one noticed the black sedan.

Or so Daniel believed.

Three vehicles behind them...

A silver SUV made every turn they made.

Inside, a man wearing an earpiece quietly spoke into a microphone.

"They've left King's Cross."

"Target is with Morrison."

There was a brief pause.

Then a calm voice replied through the earpiece.

"Do not engage."

"Just keep them in sight."

"Understood."

Daniel drove to the last place Richard Hale would expect.

Not a hotel.

Not his office.

Not his home.

An old Morrison Tech disaster recovery center on the edge of the city.

The building had been abandoned after newer facilities were built.

Officially, it was closed.

Only Daniel still had access.

As the heavy security door locked behind them, Sarah finally exhaled.

"For the first time today..."

"...I think he can't find us."

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to an old conference room and placed both hidden devices on the table.

The tiny memory card.

The encrypted flash drive from Bunny.

He stared at them for a long moment.

Then looked at Sarah.

"You said Richard became desperate after he saw you holding the memory card."

"Yes."

"But he was even more interested in the teddy bear."

She nodded.

"I think he forgot I'd sewn Bunny back together after Lily ripped him last Christmas."

Daniel slowly smiled.

"So Richard hid something..."

"...and never realized you accidentally repaired the bear before he could retrieve it."

Sarah's eyes widened.

"Oh my God..."

Daniel opened a storage cabinet.

Inside sat an old laptop.

One that had never been connected to the internet since leaving the factory years earlier.

Sarah immediately remembered the warning.

"The caller said not to use a computer."

"I know."

"So don't."

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm not using a computer."

He placed the laptop back on the shelf.

Instead, he removed a specialized forensic device designed to copy encrypted drives without executing any files.

"We built these for cybercrime investigations."

"It reads data safely."

"If there's malicious software inside..."

"...it stays trapped."

Sarah stared at him.

"You planned for things like this?"

Daniel gave a tired smile.

"I just never imagined I'd be using it to protect a little girl's teddy bear."

The device powered on.

The flash drive was inserted first.

A progress bar slowly appeared.

Reading...

Five percent.

Ten.

Twenty-seven.

Then...

The screen flashed red.

ENCRYPTION VERIFIED

WELCOME, PROJECT ORACLE

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of Project Oracle."

The device continued decoding.

A list of folders appeared.

OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS

PAYMENTS

GOVERNMENT CONTACTS

SURVEILLANCE

Sarah covered her mouth.

"What is all this?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He opened the final folder.

One video file.

No title.

No date.

He pressed Play.

The footage was grainy, clearly recorded by a hidden camera.

A luxurious private meeting room.

Richard Hale sat at the table.

But he wasn't alone.

Daniel leaned closer.

His heartbeat slowed.

Then nearly stopped.

Because sitting beside Richard...

...was someone Daniel had trusted for nearly fifteen years.

His own Chairman.

Edward Langford.

The man who had helped build Morrison Tech from the beginning.

The man Daniel had considered family.

On the video, Edward slid a thick envelope across the table.

Richard smiled.

Then Edward said words Daniel wished he had never heard.

"Once Morrison signs the merger..."

"...every government firewall in Europe will belong to us."

Daniel's hands began to shake.

The merger.

The one he had postponed.

It had never been about investment.

It had been about giving criminals access to the digital infrastructure of millions of people.

Sarah looked at him.

"What does it mean?"

Daniel slowly closed the laptop.

His face had gone completely pale.

"It means..."

"...I wasn't supposed to miss that train."

Before Sarah could respond...

Every light in the building suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

One second later...

The emergency alarm began screaming through the empty facility.

Then came the sound that froze everyone in place.

Heavy footsteps.

More than one person.

Running through the building toward them.

Daniel grabbed Lily with one arm and the flash drive with the other.

Then he whispered the only words that mattered.

May you like

"They found us."

End of Chapter 5...
