Chapter 4: The Teddy Bear's Secret

Daniel looked down at the faded teddy bear.
One button eye.
Worn brown fur.
A stitched patch on its left arm.
Nothing about it looked valuable.
Yet Richard Hale had stopped looking at Sarah.
He had stopped looking at the memory card.
His eyes never left the teddy bear.
For the first time since approaching them...
His smile looked forced.
That frightened Daniel more than anything else.
"Lily," Daniel said gently.
"May I see Bunny for just a moment?"
The little girl hugged the bear tighter.
"He gets scared."
Daniel smiled.
"I promise I'll give him right back."
Lily looked at her mother.
Sarah slowly nodded.
With obvious reluctance, Lily handed the bear to Daniel.
It felt surprisingly heavy.
Not much.
Just...
Heavier than an old stuffed toy should have been.
Daniel carefully squeezed one arm.
Soft stuffing.
The other arm.
Normal.
Then he pressed the middle of the bear's back.
Something hard.
Very hard.
Hidden beneath the stuffing.
Richard noticed the change in Daniel's expression.
His heartbeat quickened.
Daniel had found it.
"Give it back."
Richard's voice remained polite.
But it was no longer a request.
Daniel looked up calmly.
"It's only a teddy bear."
Richard smiled again.
"It belonged to my daughter."
"I'd like it returned."
Lily quietly whispered,
"It's mine."
Richard didn't even look at her.
"Of course it is, sweetheart."
"Now let Daddy hold it."
Lily took one step backward.
"No."
It was the first time she had spoken directly to him.
The station suddenly felt silent.
Even Sarah looked surprised.
Richard's smile froze.
Just for an instant.
Then it returned.
"Don't be afraid."
"I'll give Bunny right back."
Lily hid behind Daniel.
"No."
Daniel made his decision.
He slipped the teddy bear behind his back.
"I'm afraid she already answered."
Richard's eyes hardened.
"You have no legal right to interfere."
Daniel's voice stayed calm.
"Perhaps."
"But I also have no obligation to hand a frightened child over to someone she clearly fears."
Several nearby travelers had stopped walking.
They couldn't hear every word.
But they could see enough.
A crying child.
A terrified mother.
Two well-dressed men facing each other.
Phones slowly began appearing.
Someone was recording.
Richard noticed immediately.
His public smile returned.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding."
Daniel almost admired how quickly the mask came back.
Almost.
Richard slowly reached into his jacket.
Sarah gasped.
Daniel instinctively stepped forward.
Instead of a weapon...
Richard removed a leather wallet.
From it, he produced an official-looking identification card.
"I've already spoken with station security."
"My wife left during a medical crisis."
"I'm simply taking my family home."
A young security officer approached.
"Is everything alright here?"
Richard handed over the identification.
"I'm Richard Hale."
"My wife is unwell."
"I'm afraid she's become confused again."
The officer looked uncertain.
He turned toward Sarah.
"Ma'am?"
Sarah opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Months of fear had stolen her voice.
Richard answered for her.
"You see?"
"She shuts down under stress."
The officer looked back at Daniel.
"Sir..."
"Do you know these people?"
Daniel answered honestly.
"I met them less than an hour ago."
The officer blinked.
Richard smiled.
"There we are."
"I appreciate your concern."
"I'll take care of my family."
He reached toward Lily.
Instantly...
The little girl screamed.
"No!"
The sound echoed through King's Cross.
Every conversation nearby stopped.
Lily clung to Daniel's leg with both arms, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
"Please don't let him take me!"
The station fell completely silent.
The security officer stepped back.
He looked from Richard...
...to the terrified child.
Children could lie.
But terror like that...
Was difficult to fake.
Richard sighed dramatically.
"This is exactly what I've been trying to explain."
"She's been influenced."
Sarah finally found her voice.
"No!"
Richard ignored her.
"My wife has spent weeks convincing Lily to fear me."
Daniel interrupted.
"Then perhaps we should let the police sort this out."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"The police?"
"Yes."
"If everything you've said is true..."
"...you won't mind waiting."
For the first time...
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
His phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
For the first time all afternoon...
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Not annoyance.
Fear.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
Richard immediately declined the call.
One second later...
The phone rang again.
Same caller.
Again he rejected it.
Daniel quietly memorized the name that flashed across the screen.
Inspector James Carter.
Why would a police inspector keep calling Richard Hale?
And why did Richard suddenly look nervous?
Richard slipped the phone back into his pocket.
"We're wasting everyone's time."
"I'll have my solicitor handle this."
He turned to leave.
Then stopped.
He looked directly at Daniel.
"You've built an impressive company."
"It would be unfortunate..."
"...if one emotional decision destroyed everything."
It wasn't loud.
No one else nearby seemed to notice.
But Daniel understood.
It wasn't a warning.
It was a promise.
Richard walked away through the crowd without looking back.
Within seconds he disappeared among hundreds of passengers.
Sarah collapsed into a chair.
Her legs could no longer hold her.
Lily buried her face against her mother.
Daniel slowly examined the teddy bear again.
This time he carefully felt the stitching along its back.
One seam looked newer than the others.
Almost invisible.
Whoever had sewn it...
Had wanted no one to notice.
Daniel reached into his pocket and removed a small pocketknife.
Sarah looked up.
"What are you doing?"
"If Richard was willing to risk everything for this bear..."
"...it's time we found out why."
He carefully slid the blade beneath the stitching.
One cut.
Two cuts.
The stuffing slowly opened.
Then...
Something metallic dropped into his hand.
Not a toy.
Not money.
Not jewelry.
A tiny encrypted flash drive.
Wrapped inside waterproof plastic.
Daniel stared at it.
Then at the memory card in his other pocket.
Two hidden devices.
Two desperate attempts to keep them away from Richard.
Sarah's eyes widened.
"I've never seen that before."
Daniel looked at her.
"I believe you."
His phone buzzed again.
This time...
It wasn't Richard.
It wasn't Olivia.
It was an unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
A calm male voice spoke only one sentence.
"Mr. Morrison..."
"If you value that little girl's life..."
"...do not plug either device into a computer."
The call disconnected immediately.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
For the first time...
He realized this was no longer about an abusive husband.
Someone else...
Someone much more powerful...
May you like
Was already watching them.
