Chapter 2 - The Diner Bloodbath

The sound of gunfire through a closed door doesn't sound like the movies. It sounds like heavy wooden planks snapping in half, loud, rhythmic, and terrifying.
I held my hand over Theo’s mouth inside the dark pantry, pressing him against a sack of flour. He was shaking, his tiny tears wetting my palm. "Shh, baby, shh. It's just a game. A loud game," I whispered, my own tears blinding me.
Outside, the screams of Rosie and the few remaining customers cut through the air, followed by the shattering of glass and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the linoleum.
"Matteo!" Giovanni’s voice mocked, closer now. "You're getting slow! Mourning that dead wife of yours for six years softened your brain! You should have married my sister when you had the chance. You should have given the family an heir!"
"I don't need a replacement, Giovanni," Matteo’s voice rang out, cold, steady, and dangerously close to the pantry door. "And I certainly don't need a traitor in my ranks."
A rapid succession of three muffled shots echoed. A man screamed in agony, followed by the sound of someone sliding down the wall just outside our hiding place.
"You're bleeding, cousin!" Giovanni laughed, a manic, desperate sound. "You're trapped in a kitchen! My men have the perimeter covered. It’s over!"
I peered through the tiny slat in the wooden pantry door. My breath caught.
Matteo was leaning against the prep table, his left hand clutching his side. Dark, crimson blood was blooming through his white shirt and black vest. But his right hand was steady, aiming his weapon at the doorway.
And there, right in the middle of the kitchen floor, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent lights, was Theo's silver bracelet. The polished metal caught the light, reflecting brightly. Giovanni was stepping into the kitchen, his heavy boots crunching on shattered porcelain. He was looking down, searching for Matteo’s blood trail.
In three more steps, Giovanni would step on the bracelet. He would pick it up. He would read the name. And he would realize that the Vieri line wasn't dead.
Desperation seized me. I couldn't let him find it.
I quietly unlocked the pantry door.
"Mara, no!" Matteo hissed, noticing the movement, his voice a strained whisper of agony.
I didn't listen. I flung the door open, stepped out into the kitchen, and grabbed a heavy glass coffee carafe from the warmer. Before Giovanni could look down at his feet, I threw the carafe with all my might at the wall next to his head.
Smash!
Boiling coffee and shattered glass exploded across Giovanni’s face. He screamed, dropping his gun and clutching his eyes.
"You bitch!" he roared, blind with rage, flailing wildly. He lunged forward, his heavy hands catching the collar of my uniform. He slammed me against the industrial refrigerator, his fingers wrapping around my throat. "Who the hell are you—"
As his eyes cleared through the pain, his face morphed from rage to absolute, paralyzing horror. He looked at my face, recognizing me instantly.
"Mara?" Giovanni gasped, his grip loosening in sheer disbelief. "You... you're alive? But the car... the bomb..." His eyes darted down, finally spotting the silver bracelet on the floor. He saw the inscription. Theodore Vieri.
A dark, evil smile spread across Giovanni’s face. "An heir. You hid a bastard boy from us."
"Don't touch her," Matteo growled.
Before Giovanni could turn, Matteo closed the distance. With a feral roar, Matteo drove a heavy kitchen knife straight through Giovanni's hand, pinning it to the wooden prep table. Giovanni screamed in agony. Matteo didn't hesitate. He grabbed Giovanni by the hair, forcing him to look into his eyes.
"You looked for my wife to kill her," Matteo whispered, his voice like death itself. "Now you found her. Say goodbye."
Bang.
Giovanni went limp. Matteo let the body fall to the floor.
He staggered, his wound pouring blood. He looked at me, his eyes fading, his strength giving out. "Mara... take the boy. My men... they aren't all loyal. You have to run..."
But before he could collapse, the back door of the diner was kicked open. A dozen men in tactical gear poured in. I screamed, stepping in front of the pantry to shield Theo.
But the men didn't raise their weapons at us. Instead, they dropped to one knee before the bleeding Don.
At the front of the group was Marco, Matteo’s fiercely loyal consigliere and lifelong friend. He looked at Matteo, then at me, and finally at the pantry where Theo’s terrified face was peeking out.
Marco gasped, crossing himself. "Holy Mother of God... it’s a miracle."
"Marco," Matteo choked out, coughing up blood. "Secure them. Protect my wife. Protect... my son. If anyone touches them... burn the world down."

Matteo collapsed into unconsciousness.
Hook / Cliffhanger: Marco immediately ordered his men to lift Matteo, but as he turned to me, his expression wasn't one of relief—it was one of absolute terror. "Signora Vieri, we have to move right now," Marco whispered, wrapping his coat around my shoulders. "Giovanni was working with the Russian syndicate. They don't just want Matteo dead anymore. They just intercepted a radio transmission. They know the boy exists, and they’re hunting him."
