Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

"Move! Now!" Matteo commanded, tearing the IV lines out of his arms with a brutal jerk. Blood sprayed from his veins, but he didn't even blink. He lunged out of the bed, grabbing a heavy assault rifle from the wall mount behind his headboard.

Despite his massive blood loss, the primal instinct to protect his child turned Matteo into an absolute monster. He scooped Theo up with his left arm, anchoring the boy against his chest, while holding the rifle with his right.

"Mara, stay behind me. Don't look away from my back," he ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

The hallways were chaos. Gunfire rattled from the floor below, the concussive blasts shaking the ancient stone walls. Dust and plaster rained down on us. Theo hid his face in Matteo's neck, screaming as the deafening noise overwhelmed him.

"I've got you, son. I've got you," Matteo muttered fiercely, firing a burst down the stairwell as two men dressed in black tactical gear rounded the corner. Both men dropped instantly, their blood splattering across the pristine white marble floors.

We sprinted toward the estate’s underground bunker—a reinforced steel panic room buried deep within the coastal rock.

Marco and three loyal guards covered our rear, firing blindly into the advancing smoke. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, blood, and burning electronics. The estate’s powergrid failed, plunging us into darkness, illuminated only by the rhythmic, terrifying red flash of the emergency backup lights.

We reached the heavy steel vault door of the bunker.

"Marco, punch in the override code!" Matteo yelled over the sound of an approaching explosion.

Marco stepped forward, his hands trembling as he typed the twelve-digit code into the digital keypad. The light turned from red to green, and the massive steel gears groaned as the vault door began to slide open.

"Get inside," Matteo gasped, his strength finally failing him. He fell to one knee, handing Theo to me. His bandage was completely soaked through with fresh, bright red blood. "Mara, take him inside. The bunker has its own oxygen supply and a tunnel that leads to a hidden boat on the shore. Take the boat. Go to the safehouse in Boston."

"Not without you!" I cried, grabbing his blood-soaked vest. "I didn't find you just to watch you die, Matteo! We leave together!"

"I have to hold the line, Mara," Matteo whispered, looking at Theo with a gaze full of tragic, desperate love. "If I don't stay and lock this door from the outside, they will override the system. I have to blow the structural supports of the hallway to seal you in."

"Boss, let me do it," Marco said suddenly, stepping forward. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a remote detonator.

Matteo looked up at his trusted friend, relief washing over his face. "Thank you, Marco. Secure the door after we enter."

But Marco didn't move toward the console. Instead, he pointed his weapon directly at Matteo’s chest.

I froze, my breath catching in my throat.

"I’m sorry, Don Matteo," Marco said, his voice cold, devoid of any of the warmth or loyalty he had shown for the past decade. "But the Bratva offered me something you never could. Total immunity, and half of the Vieri territory. They didn't know you had a son until today, but honestly? It changes nothing. The boy just makes the payout higher."

Matteo’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal fury. "I trusted you with my life, Marco. I made you my brother."

"And you became weak because of a ghost!" Marco spat, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You stopped expanding. You stopped killing. You spent six years crying over a dead girl! The family was dying under your rule. It’s time for new blood."

Marco aimed his gun straight at Theo. "And the Vieri bloodline ends tonight."

Hook / Cliffhanger: Before Marco could pull the trigger, a loud, metallic click echoed from behind him. One of the tactical guards Marco had brought with him as "loyal security" drove a combat knife straight through Marco's throat. As Marco collapsed, coughing up blood, the guard pulled off his helmet, revealing a face I never expected to see: it was Viktor, the underboss of the Russian Bratva himself. He looked at Matteo, then smiled at me. "Don Vieri," Viktor purred. "We didn't come to kill your son. We came to take him. A living heir is worth far more than a dead one."
