Chapter 2 - The Glass Tower and the Ghost from the PastThe lobby of Vanguard Enterprises looked less like an office building and more like a modern art museum carved from glass, white marble, and brushed steel.

At 8:55 a.m., Claire stood in front of the towering security gates wearing her only interview-appropriate outfit: a navy blue blazer she had thrifted in college and tailored herself, paired with scuffed black flats. Her hands were clammy, clutching a worn leatherette portfolio containing three crumpled copies of her resume.

She handed Ethan’s matte-black business card to the security guard.

The guard’s eyes widened slightly as he inspected the card, then scanned Claire up and down, taking in her exhausted eyes and simple attire. Without a word, he tapped a code into his console, and the heavy glass turnstile clicked open.

"Mr. Cole’s private elevator is at the end of the hall. Floor forty-two," the guard instructed, his tone shifting from clinical indifference to cautious respect.

The private elevator ride felt like an ascent into the stratosphere. When the doors slid open on the forty-second floor, a tall, impeccably dressed man with silver-streaked hair was waiting.

"Ms. Morgan?" he asked, extending a hand. "I’m Marcus, Mr. Cole’s chief of staff. Right this way, please."

Claire was led through a sprawling, sunlit suite of offices that overlooked the entire Indianapolis skyline. The silence of the floor was absolute, broken only by the muffled clack of keyboards and the hushed tones of executives moving through glass-walled conference rooms.

Marcus opened a heavy mahogany door and gestured for her to enter.

Ethan Cole was standing by floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a ceramic mug of coffee. He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit that fit him with razor-sharp precision. When the door clicked shut behind Marcus, Ethan turned around.

"Good morning, Claire. How is Sophie?"

"She slept through the night," Claire said, standing rigidly by the door, refusing to sit down until invited. "For the first time in weeks, she slept four straight hours. Thank you."

"Sit down, Claire," Ethan said, gesturing to a leather armchair opposite his massive walnut desk. "You don't have to stand at attention. You're not reporting to a drill sergeant."

Claire hesitantly took a seat, placing her portfolio tightly across her lap. "Mr. Cole... Ethan. I need to be honest. I don't understand what’s happening. Why am I here? People in your position don't play fairy godmother to strangers they meet at midnight."

Ethan walked slowly around his desk and sat down, resting his elbows on the polished wood.

"Let’s talk about your resume," Ethan said, ignoring her question for a moment. He picked up a printed copy of her CV from his desk. "Certified Nursing Assistant for four years. Supervisor commendations for exceptional patient care. Perfect attendance until your pregnancy complications arose."

He looked up, his grey eyes piercing.

"And then, Vanguard’s automated applicant tracking system flagged you as a high-risk candidate because of an interrupted employment history and a credit inquiry check. Do you know how many brilliant, dedicated people our corporate algorithms screen out every single day, Claire?"

"I assumed it was a standard procedure," Claire murmured.

"It’s a flawed one," Ethan corrected sharply. "And I’m the CEO, which means I have the authority to fix it. But that’s not why you’re sitting in this chair."

He leaned forward, lowering his voice.

"Yesterday afternoon, before I ever received your accidental text message, I received a private investigator’s report on my desk."

Claire’s heart skipped a beat. "A private investigator? Why would a PI be investigating me?"

"Not you," Ethan said grimly. "My brother, Julian. Or rather, the man who used to be my brother."

The name hit Claire like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs, and the room seemed to tilt on its axis.

"Julian?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking.

"Yes," Ethan said, watching her reaction closely. "Julian Cole. The man who swept you off your feet, promised you the world, and then vanished into thin air the moment you told him you were pregnant with his child. The man who abandoned you and left you to face medical bankruptcy alone."

May you like

Ethan stood up, walking back to the window, his jaw clenched so tight muscles ticked in his cheek.

"Julian didn't just abandon you, Claire," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He stole millions of dollars from Vanguard’s philanthropic trust fund before he fled the country eighteen months ago. And according to my investigator, he just booked a flight back to Indianapolis. He’s landing this Friday."
