Chapter 3 - The Ghost ReturnsThe rest of the week passed in a blur of surreal, terrifying transitions.

By Wednesday afternoon, Claire was no longer an unemployed single mother facing eviction; she was officially appointed as Vanguard’s new Community Outreach and Employee Family Support Coordinator—a newly created position designed specifically to bridge the gap between corporate management and struggling employees. The salary was triple what she had made at the call center, complete with full health insurance that retroactively covered Sophie’s NICU bills.

Ethan had ensured that every obstacle was demolished overnight.

Yet, as Thursday rolled into Friday, the profound relief Claire felt was eclipsed by a paralyzing dread.

Julian.

The father of her child. The man who had looked into her eyes with tears of joy when she first told him she was pregnant, only to disappear two days later, leaving behind a disconnected phone number and a note telling her to "take care of it."

It was 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Claire was sitting in her newly organized office on the thirty-fifth floor, staring down at a spreadsheet, when her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

An unknown number.

Her fingers trembled as she slid to answer.

"Hello?"

"Claire? God, Claire, please tell me you're still there."

The voice was smooth, cultured, and laced with an urgent, desperate charm that had once completely disarmed her.

Julian.

"How did you get this number?" Claire demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of fury and residual trauma.

"It doesn't matter," Julian rushed out, sounding breathless, as if he were walking fast through a crowded terminal. "I’m back in the city, Claire. I landed at Indianapolis International twenty minutes ago. I know I’ve been a coward. I know I destroyed everything. But I’ve changed. I have money now, big money, and I want to fix this. I want to be a father to my little girl. Please, let me see Sophie."

Claire stood up so fast her ergonomic chair rolled backward and crashed into the filing cabinet.

"You want to see Sophie?" Claire shouted, drawing the startled glances of coworkers walking past her open glass door. She stepped outside into the hallway to lower her voice, her whole body vibrating with rage. "Where were you when she was fighting for every breath in an incubator for six weeks, Julian? Where were you when I had three dollars in my account and no formula to feed her at midnight?"

"I was trapped overseas, Claire! I was trying to secure our future!" Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with theatrical emotion. "I made mistakes, but I’m a different man now. Meet me. Let’s get a coffee. Name the place. I want to sign the birth certificate, I want to set up a trust fund, I want—"

"You want an alibi," a deep, authoritative voice cut through the phone line.

Claire gasped, spinning around.

Ethan Cole was standing behind her in the hallway, his expression carved out of granite. He held out his hand, silently signaling for her to hand over the phone.

Without thinking, Claire pressed the speakerphone button and handed the device to Ethan.

"Julian," Ethan said smoothly into the receiver, his voice echoing in the quiet corridor.

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.

"Ethan?" Julian’s voice dropped its desperate charm, instantly turning hostile. "What the hell are you doing with Claire? Put her back on the phone right now, you narcissistic corporate tyrant!"

"She doesn't want to talk to you, Julian," Ethan replied, stepping closer to Claire as if to shield her from the phantom threat of the phone call. "And neither do the federal marshals who are currently waiting by Baggage Claim Terminal B."

Silence fell over the phone line—a heavy, suffocating silence.

"What... what are you talking about?" Julian stammered, the bravado completely vanishing from his voice.

"Did you really think you could embezzle four point two million dollars from the Vanguard Foundation, hide out in the Cayman Islands for a year and a half, and then stroll back into Indiana because you felt like playing suburban dad?" Ethan’s voice was lethal. "The embezzlement warrants were signed this morning, little brother. Enjoy the welcoming committee."

Click.

Ethan hung up the phone and dropped it onto a nearby table. He turned to Claire, whose face had gone pale as paper.

"You set a trap," Claire whispered, her eyes wide.

"I laid out the cheese," Ethan corrected calmly. "He walked right into the cage. Are you alright, Claire?"

Before Claire could answer, the fire alarms in the building began to shriek, and the overhead emergency speakers crackled to life.
