Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM EXECUTIONBy noon, the Long Island suburban home looked like a war zone.

The front lawn was covered in Richard’s belongings, surrounded by yellow police-style tape reading: STERLING ASSET RECOVERY ZONE - PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Richard and Olivia sat miserably on a pile of cheap plastic storage bins by the curb, while neighbors watched from behind closed curtains, whispering and pointing. Vanessa had already sped away in her white sports car, ignoring Richard’s frantic screams as she blocked his number on her phone.

Inside the rear cabin of the corporate helicopter, soaring high above the Atlantic coastline toward Manhattan, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Soft classical music played through the overhead speakers. A personal steward poured sparkling mineral water into a crystal glass and handed it to Maya.

Across from her sat Julian Sterling, his expression a mix of deep professional respect and quiet fascination.

“The legal filings have been submitted to the U.S. District Court, Miss Sterling,” Julian said, sliding a leather-bound folio across the table. “Your father’s former business associates—the ones who engineered the hostile takeover of Sterling Logistics twenty years ago while you were still a child—have been officially notified of your return. They are currently panicking.”

Maya took a slow sip of water, looking out the panoramic window at the glittering skyline of Manhattan rising on the horizon like a crown of glass and steel.

“Let them panic,” Maya said softly, her voice steady and lethal. “They spent twenty years treating my family’s legacy like a carcass to be scavenged. It’s time to remind them who owns the butcher shop.”

“Your primary target is Victor Sterling—your estranged uncle, who assumed control of the board after your mother’s disappearance,” Julian continued, tapping a finger against a dossier labeled CONFIDENTIAL: EXECUTIVE BOARDROOM. “He scheduled an emergency shareholder vote for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. He intended to liquidate the remaining trust assets and retire to the Cayman Islands.”

A cold, beautiful smile touched the corners of Maya’s lips.

“A shareholder vote?” she murmured. “How convenient. I happen to own fifty-one percent of the voting shares, thanks to the irrevocable trust my grandfather established before his passing.”

Julian chuckled softly, a rare sound of genuine amusement. “Victor has spent two decades telling the board that you perished in the same car crash that took your mother’s life. When you walk through those oak doors tomorrow morning, half the directors might actually suffer cardiac arrest.”

“Let’s make sure the medical team is on standby, then,” Maya replied smoothly.

When the helicopter touched down on the private helipad atop the seventy-story Sterling Tower in midtown Manhattan, a phalanx of senior executives, legal counsel, and security personnel were lined up in two perfect rows. As Maya stepped out of the aircraft, every single person bowed their head in synchronized silence.
