Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A SETUPBy Thursday afternoon, the trap sprang.

I hadn't touched the falsified files for the audit. Instead, I had spent forty-eight hours quietly downloading the unredacted digital backups from the secure server room—backups that could not be doctored by internal admin rights. I copied them onto an encrypted flash drive and slipped it into the lining of my leather portfolio.
I knew the risks. At a firm like Blackridge Capital, compliance officers didn't just investigate fraud; they weaponized it.
At precisely 3:00 PM, security guards in stiff navy uniforms didn't knock on my door. They filled my doorway.
"Evelyn Carter?" the lead guard asked, his voice entirely devoid of human inflection. "Surrender your badge and your personal electronics. You're instructed to report to human resources immediately."
"On whose authority?" I asked, keeping my voice level, though my heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
"Executive Committee," he said, stepping forward. "Walk."
They marched me through the open-plan office floor. Every head snapped up. Whispers rippled across the rows of desks like wind through dry grass. People I had shared lunches with, people whose tax questions I had answered, suddenly found the intricate details of their computer monitors utterly fascinating.
When I pushed open the door to the executive conference room, it felt more like an execution chamber.
Monica Shaw sat at the head of the mahogany table. Ryan Kessler stood by the window, swirling scotch in a heavy crystal tumbler. Caleb Dunn was tapping frantically on a sleek tablet.
"Sit down, Evelyn," Monica said. Her voice was no longer warm. It was cold, clinical, and dripping with malicious satisfaction.
"I prefer to stand," I replied.
Monica shrugged, leaning back in her leather chair. "As you wish. We’ll skip the pleasantries. At 1:15 PM today, an internal security audit flagged an unauthorized data exfiltration originating from your terminal. Simultaneously, an external forensic review of the 2018 legacy accounts revealed a five-million-dollar deficit. The missing funds were traced directly to an account under your digital signature."
I stared at her, feeling a cold fury bloom in my chest. "My digital signature? Monica, you and Caleb signed those transfers. I have the unredacted server logs right here—"
I reached for my portfolio.
Caleb Dunn slammed his tablet onto the table. "Don't touch your bag! Security has already mirrored your workstation. We found the offshore routing files cached in your temporary system folders. You looted five million dollars from our high-yield reserve, tried to cover your tracks by fabricating a ghost audit, and now you're going to spend the next ten to fifteen years explaining it to a federal judge."
It was a masterpiece of corporate framing. Clean, airtight, and entirely fabricated.
"You're destroying my career over a lie," I said, my voice dangerously quiet.
"Your career was over the moment you thought you could steal from Blackridge Capital," Ryan Kessler sneered, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "Pack your things. Security will escort you out. We’ve already notified the authorities."

They didn't give me a chance to speak. They didn't look at my evidence. They had already written the script, and I was merely the actress cast in the role of the criminal.
That was when I walked out the glass doors, heard the heavy electronic click behind me, and reached for my phone to call Jae.
