Chapter 8 - The Ashes of Cole DominionThree days later, the private jet touched down in Charlotte under a grey, drizzling sky.

The media storm had already begun. By the time our car pulled through the security gates of my estate, the front entrance was swarming with reporters, financial journalists, and television crews shouting questions about the collapse of Cole Dominion Holdings' subsidiary accounts and the federal raids on the Bahamian cay.

I didn't care about the headlines. I didn't care about the stock plunge, the board meetings, or the billions in assets that would have to be restructured to pay off the legitimate debts and clear our name.

The empire was smaller now. But for the first time in my life, it was real.

Vanessa sat beside me in the back of the SUV, her hand resting securely in mine. The thin white scar on my thumb brushed against her knuckles—a permanent reminder of the day I tried to play a beggar and nearly lost the only treasure that mattered.

"The board is calling an emergency vote at noon," Marcus said from the front passenger seat, turning around with a tablet. "Henderson wants to strip you of the CEO title and liquidate the remaining logistics division."

"Let them try," I said, squeezing Vanessa’s hand. "We'll build something new. Something honest."

Vanessa looked up at me, a small, genuine smile touching her lips—the kind of smile without any hidden shadows, without champagne laughter or secret fears.

"Are you sure you're ready to lose it all, Adrien?" she asked softly.

I looked down at her, leaning over to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.

"I already lost everything once," I whispered. "And it turns out, that was the best thing that ever happened to me."
