Chapter 10 - THE TWISTED LEGACY AND THE NEW BEGINNINGDaniela and Méndez sprinted back inside the smoldering ruins. The fire had been largely extinguished, leaving behind a charred, smoking skeleton of furniture and ash.

The back bedroom wall—previously hidden behind three layers of heavy oak wardrobes and floor-to-ceiling shelving—had completely caved in under the heat and water pressure.
Exposing what lay behind it.
There was no hidden door. There was no secret exit.
Instead, neatly embedded directly into the concrete foundation of the partition wall was a custom-built, industrial stainless steel vault door, unlocked and slightly ajar.
Inside the vault, illuminated by the dying embers of the fire, sat a neat row of dozens of identical cardboard archive boxes, each meticulously labeled with dates, names, and photographs dating back over a decade. And right at the front, resting on a small wooden pedestal, was a framed photograph of a young woman who looked identical to Mateo—surrounded by glowing newspaper clippings of missing persons cases from across the state of Jalisco.
Doña Rosa stood at the entrance of the charred bedroom, her frail frame no longer trembling. She looked at Daniela with eyes completely devoid of fear, carrying the heavy, chilling weight of a decades-long secret finally brought to light.

—He didn't run away, Officer Cruz, —Doña Rosa whispered softly, the flames reflecting in her tired eyes. —He went to open the rest of the boxes. Because in this family... the truth is the heaviest thing of all, and someone always has to carry it.
Outside, the first rays of dawn began to break over the rooftops of Guadalajara, casting a golden light over a neighborhood that would never be the same again. Daniela clipped her radio to her belt, knowing the investigation was only just beginning—and that Mateo was out there, stepping out of the shadows to reclaim a legacy built entirely on secrets.
