Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE LABYRINTHHand resting firmly on the holster of her service weapon, Daniela stepped past Doña Rosa, maneuvering sideways through the narrow, suffocating trench of accumulated trash.

—Guadalajara Police! Identify yourself! —she commanded, her voice cutting sharply through the stale, suffocating air of the hallway.

No one answered. Only the low, rhythmic hum of an old refrigerator somewhere in the suffocating darkness responded.

Daniela flicked on her tactical flashlight, sweeping the narrow beam across towering stacks of expired newspapers, electronic appliances caked in dust, and trash bags bloated with unidentifiable objects. The layout of the house made no logical sense. Walls that should have opened into a kitchen or a secondary bedroom were completely blocked by makeshift barricades. It was a fortress built entirely out of garbage.

As she reached what should have been the back exit, the beam of her flashlight caught something that made her blood run cold.

Nailed directly over the back door from the inside were heavy wooden planks, reinforced with steel brackets and bolted shut with thick padlocks. This wasn't just hoarding; it was imprisonment. Someone had deliberately sealed this house off from the outside world, turning a home into a concrete tomb.

Suddenly, a cold breath grazed the back of her neck.

Daniela whipped around, her gun raised—
