Chapter 4 - SECRETS UNVEILEDThe name Julian Sterling hung in the air like a death sentence.

Sterling Dynamics had been trying to acquire Thompson Global for three years. We had consistently rejected their hostile takeover bids because their business ethics were notoriously corrupt. Now, Sterling had found our ultimate weakness: the dark, ugly secret buried in our family's past.
"Julian Sterling bought Maria's claim," I told my sisters, my brain working at maximum capacity. "He's using her to create a legal deadlock, drive our stock price into the gutter, and force the board of directors to vote for a emergency merger with Sterling Dynamics."
"It's a hostile takeover disguised as a family drama," Claire said, her analytical mind finally taking over her panic. "If Sterling merges our companies, he gains full access to our proprietary Quantum-AI algorithms."
"And Maria gets her billion-dollar payout as a finder's fee," Sophie added, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "That snake."
"We need proof," I said firmly. "We need hard evidence connecting Sterling to Maria before the board meeting tomorrow at 9:00 AM. If we can prove collusion and market manipulation, we can get the SEC involved and crush their injunction."
"I'll handle the digital footprint," Sophie said, pulling out her encrypted laptop. "If Sterling wired money to Maria or Vance, there’s a paper trail, no matter how deep they buried it in offshore accounts."
"I'll talk to the board members," Claire offered. "I'll stall the vote."
"And I," I said, my heart tightening, "am going to pay Maria a personal visit."
Two hours later, I stood outside the penthouse suite of the St. Regis Hotel. Sterling was sparing no expense—Maria was living like royalty.
I didn't knock. I used a master keycard provided by a high-level contact I had in the city's hospitality union. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside.
Maria was sitting on a velvet sofa, sipping vintage champagne, looking at a glossy magazine spread of herself.
She didn't look surprised when I walked in. She simply put her glass down and smiled.
"Ava," she said smoothly. "I expected Claire first. She always seemed like the weaker link. But you... you have your father's stubborn eyes."
"Don't speak about my father," I said, standing over her, every nerve in my body screaming with disgust. "I know about Chicago, Maria. I know about the Moretti syndicate. I know you traded three infant girls to save your own miserable life."
For a split second, Maria’s composure cracked. A flash of genuine fear washed across her face, but she quickly masked it with a cruel laugh.
"So, the old man finally confessed?" she scoffed. "Robert was always a fool. He thought he was saving you. The truth is, Ava, I did you a favor. If I had stayed, you would have grown up in a trailer park, married to some local mechanic. I gave you the hardship that turned you into diamonds!"
"You're a sociopath," I said, taking out my phone. "You sold us out to Julian Sterling. We know he’s paying for your legal team."
"And what if he is?" Maria leaned forward, her eyes cold as ice. "Sterling offered me two hundred million dollars up front and a seat on the board of the merged corporation once Thompson Global collapses. He gave me what your father never could: power. You think you can stop this? It's over, Ava. Tomorrow at 9 AM, your board votes. Your stock crashes. And I win."
"You forgot one thing, Maria," I said quietly, looking down at her.
"Oh? And what's that?"
"You underestimated how far a real family will go to protect each other."
Suddenly, the side door of the suite opened. Two men in black suits stepped out. But they weren't hotel staff, and they weren't Sterling's security.

They were federal agents from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Maria’s glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the marble floor.
