Chapter 7 - THE RECKONINGTwo months later.

The courtroom in lower Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity. The trial of The United States v. Julian Sterling and Maria Thompson had dominated global news for weeks.

My sisters, my father, and I sat in the front row of the prosecution side. Dad was wearing a sharp, tailored suit—the first high-end suit he had ever worn in his life—looking regal and proud.

Across the room, sitting at the defense table, were Maria Thompson and Julian Sterling.

Maria looked hollowed out. Her designer clothes were replaced by an orange prison jumpsuit. Her hair was messy, her posture broken. Without money, power, and high-end makeup, she was just a lonely, bitter woman facing the consequences of a lifetime of malice.

Julian Sterling looked equally defeated. His empire had collapsed, his stock had plummeted to zero, and his board of directors had fired him weeks ago.

The judge slammed his gavel down, bringing the courtroom to absolute order.

"Will the jury foreperson please read the verdict?" the judge instructed.

A middle-aged woman stood up, holding a piece of paper. The tension in the room was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

"On the charge of conspiracy to commit corporate fraud," the foreperson read, "we find the defendant, Julian Sterling, GUILTY."

Gasps erupted.

"On the charge of attempted arson and murder, we find the defendant, Julian Sterling, GUILTY."

"On the charge of extortion and market manipulation, we find the defendant, Maria Thompson, GUILTY."

Maria burried her face in her hands and began to sob hysterically. "No! Please! I'm a victim! My daughters destroyed me!"

The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Silence in the court!"

When the room quieted down, the judge looked directly at Maria, his expression filled with absolute disgust.

"Maria Thompson," the judge said, his voice echoing through the courtroom. "You abandoned three defenseless infants to pursue wealth. Decades later, when those children built a legacy through sheer blood, sweat, and tears, you returned not with remorse, but with greed and destruction. You conspired with criminals to ruin your own flesh and blood. You have shown zero true repentance."

The judge turned to his papers.

"I sentence Julian Sterling to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. And I sentence Maria Thompson to twenty years in maximum-security confinement."

Maria let out a blood-curdling shriek as federal marshals grabbed her arms to drag her away.

As she passed our row, she stopped, looking at Dad with desperate, wild eyes.

"Robert! Please!" she begged, tears ruining her face. "Tell them to stop! You loved me once! Tell your daughters to forgive me! Tell them to give me a second chance!"

Dad stood up slowly. He walked over to her, looking down at the woman who had shattered his youth and tried to steal his children's future.

"I loved a woman named Maria thirty years ago," Dad said, his voice calm, steady, and devoid of any lingering pain. "But that woman died the day she left that note. You are just a stranger suffering the consequences of your own choices. Goodbye, Maria."

Maria was dragged through the heavy oak doors, her screams fading into the corridor until there was nothing left but silence.
