Chapter 3 - THE RAT FLEES THE SINKING SHIP

If Adrian thought the corporate collapse was bad, he hadn't yet experienced the loyalty of a mistress whose meal ticket had just been canceled.
By Tuesday afternoon, the news had broken nationwide: Tech Prodigy Adrian Reynolds Facing Federal Probe; Reynolds Industries Files for Bankruptcy.
The media trucks were parked three deep outside the luxury gated community where our mansion—or rather, my mansion—was located. Reporters were crawling over the manicured lawns like ants, shoving microphones at any window that offered a glimpse inside.
Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of cheap panic and expensive perfume.
"What do you mean, your cards are still frozen?!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the marble pillars as she slammed a designer handbag down onto the entry table.
Adrian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, frantically pacing back and forth with a dead cell phone clutched in his palm. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his tie was gone, and the slick, confident posture he had worn for years was completely gone, replaced by the hunched shoulders of a beaten dog.
"I told you, Vanessa, the federal freeze covers all linked accounts!" Adrian snapped back, finally losing his temper. He whirled around to face her, his eyes wild. "And stop shouting! The media is outside! If they see us together like this—"
"I don't give a damn about the media!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of pure rage springing to her eyes. She marched right up to him, shoving her finger into his chest. "You promised me this lifestyle! You told me Victoria was just a stepping stone, that you were the genius behind everything, and that once the divorce went through, we’d be living like royalty! But I’m locked out of my apartments, my car lease was repo'd this morning, and my designer clothes are currently tied up in a federal asset audit!"
Adrian grabbed her wrists, trying to push her away, his face twisted in disgust.
"Get off me! Do you think I planned this? I thought I was invincible! How was I supposed to know her family owned half the damn financial district?!"
"You didn't even ask!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically, her mask of cool arrogance entirely shattered. The reality of her situation was finally crashing down around her. Without Adrian's stolen wealth, without her luxury apartment, and without her high-flying corporate job—which she had also been fired from by noon—she was nobody. Just a gold-digger stranded on a sinking raft. "You were so busy strutting around like a peacock that you didn't even check who bought the cage you were sitting in!"
"Shut up!" Adrian roared, raising his hand instinctively.
Before the blow could land, the heavy front doors swung open.
Both of them froze, turning toward the entryway.
I stood there in the doorway, wearing a cashmere ivory coat, holding a steaming cup of artisan coffee, flanked by two private security guards in sleek black suits.
"Oh, please," I said smoothly, stepping into the foyer and casually pulling off my leather gloves. "Don't stop on my account. Watching two rats fight over crumbs on a sinking ship is the best entertainment I've had all week."
Adrian’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He took a step toward me, desperation leaking through his anger.
"Victoria," he choked out, his voice softening into a pathetic, pleading whine. "Vicky... please. You have to listen to me. I made a mistake. A massive mistake. It was Vanessa—she seduced me, she manipulated me, she made me lose my mind! But I love you. I always loved you. We can fix this. You can call your father off. We can rebuild—"
Before he could take another step forward, my security guards smoothly stepped in front of me, crossing their massive arms like a brick wall.
Vanessa let out a harsh, bitter laugh, wiping the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"Save your breath, Adrian," Vanessa spat, glaring at him with pure venom. "You're pathetic. You thought you were a king, and you were just a rented tenant playing dress-up." She turned her sharp gaze onto me, her voice dropping into a desperate plea. "Victoria... look, I was just an employee. He pursued me! He told me you were getting a divorce anyway! If you let me go, I can give you all his corporate communications, his back-channel emails, everything you need to bury him completely—"
I raised an eyebrow, taking a slow sip of my coffee.
"Vanessa," I said softly, my voice cutting through her panic like a scalpel. "Did you really think I needed your help to bury him?"
She blinked, confused.
"Every single email, every secret offshore account, every shady back-channel deal Adrian made over the last three years was automatically forwarded to an encrypted archive managed by my father's legal team the moment he signed the corporate merger," I explained, tilting my head with a cold smile. "I didn't need your evidence. I already had the entire blueprint of his downfall before you even bought that dress."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked back at Adrian, the horrifying realization washing over her that she had hitched her wagon to a man who had been dead the moment he crossed me, and she had ridden the horse right off the cliff with him.

"You're a monster," Vanessa whispered, staring at me in absolute horror.
"No, Vanessa," I said, turning toward the door as my guards cleared the path. "I'm just a woman who finally took out the trash. And speaking of trash..." I gestured vaguely around the grand foyer. "You have twenty minutes to pack whatever fits in a garbage bag before the new locks are installed and the marshals clear the property. Try not to leave any lipstick on the mirrors. It’s tacky."
