Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

CRASH!
A cascade of blinding blue sparks erupted from the control panel as the iron wrench smashed through the digital display. The heavy security doors, programmed to lock down during an emergency, suffered a massive electrical short circuit and snapped wide open with a sharp, pneumatic groan.
Dr. Sterling jumped back, dropping the syringe onto the metal instrument tray with a metallic clatter. Beatrice spun around, her face draining of all color as she stared in absolute horror at the doorway.
Clara strode into the room like an avenging angel, her golden robe billowing behind her, her eyes blazing with a terrifying intensity.
"Step away from my son," Clara’s voice was a low, lethal hiss that commanded the entire room.
"Clara? How... how did you get out?" Beatrice stammered, taking an involuntary step backward, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into jagged pieces. "Guards! Security, to Ward 4 immediately!"
"Save your breath, Beatrice," Clara sneered, stepping between the crib and the elderly matriarch. She snatched the medical syringe off the tray, holding it up to the overhead fluorescent light. "Looking for the clean execution tool? Or were you planning to blame this one on a sudden infant death syndrome?"
Dr. Sterling wiped a bead of nervous sweat from his forehead, looking desperately at the doorway. "Madame Vance, please... this is a misunderstanding. We were merely administering a routine vitamin supplement—"
"Shut your lying mouth," Clara snapped, turning the tip of the needle directly toward the doctor. The sheer menace in her posture made the seasoned physician recoil. "I know about the ledgers. I know about Julian. And I know you signed the forged autopsy report for my husband six months ago."
Beatrice’s eyes narrowed, a cold, dangerous glint replacing her panic. She realized in that instant that there was no turning back, no polite cover story left to salvage.
"You think you’ve won something by escaping that room, don't you, little girl?" Beatrice hissed, her voice losing all its false warmth, revealing the calculating monster beneath. "Julian was just as weak as you. He wanted to give away half the shipping empire to fund some foolish environmental charity. He had to be removed. And this child... this child would have grown up just like him, destroying everything my husband and I built over fifty years."
Clara stared at her mother-in-law, a profound wave of disgust washing over her. "You murdered your own son."
"I protected the dynasty," Beatrice corrected coldly, her hand slipping slowly inside her tailored blazer. "And I will finish what I started today. Permanently."
Before Beatrice’s hand could clear her jacket, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway.
"Drop the weapon, Madame Vance."
It wasn't Thomas. Stepping into the room behind Clara were three uniformed federal agents, their badges gleaming under the harsh lights, flanked by the estate’s head of security, who looked pale and shaken.
"Federal Marshal's Office," the lead agent announced, raising his service weapon and pointing it directly at Beatrice. "You are under arrest for the assassination of Julian Vance, conspiracy to commit murder, and financial fraud across state lines. The game is over, Beatrice."

Beatrice froze, her hand still trapped inside her blazer. She looked from the federal agents to Clara, and finally down at the little crib where baby Leo let out a soft yawn, completely oblivious to the dramatic storm raging around him.
The invincible matriarch slowly withdrew her empty hand, her shoulders slumping as the heavy weight of her crimes finally crashed down upon her.
