Chapter 6 - Ashes of the Empire

Three days later, the morning sun broke over the Vance estate, casting a warm, golden glow across the manicured lawns and the silent, imposing facade of the mansion. But the glittering illusion of perfection was gone. Police tape cordoned off the East Wing, federal investigators combed through the private archives, and the name Vance was flashing across every major news headline worldwide, synonymous with corporate corruption, betrayal, and familial murder.
Inside the nursery, the air smelled fresh, washed clean of chemical residue and deceit.
Clara stood by the window, wearing a simple white linen dress, watching little Leo play with a wooden rattle in his crib. The trauma of the past week still lingered in the dark shadows beneath her eyes, but her posture was no longer that of a trapped victim. She was the sole legal trustee of the Vance estate, holding absolute control over the empire Beatrice had killed to protect.
The heavy door opened softly, and Thomas stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.
"The federal prosecutors just sent over the final asset seizure documents, Madame," Thomas said quietly, stepping forward and placing the folder on the mahogany desk. "Beatrice and Dr. Sterling are being held without bail. Their trial starts next month. The board of directors has officially voted to restructure the company under your direct leadership."
Clara didn't turn around immediately. She watched a pair of sparrows dart across the garden below, their freedom starkly contrasting with the gilded prison she had fought so hard to conquer.
"And the staff, Thomas?" she asked softly.
"Everyone who stood by and enabled her has been let go," Thomas replied. "The loyal ones have been promoted. The estate is... clean, Madame."
Clara finally turned, a faint, complex smile touching the corners of her lips. She reached down, picking up her son from the crib and lifting him into her arms. The baby giggled, wrapping his tiny, warm fingers around her thumb.

"Good," Clara murmured, kissing the top of his soft head. "Because from now on, nothing enters this house—and nothing threatens this family—ever again."
She walked toward the double doors, leaving the past buried in the ashes of the empire behind her, ready to rule her world on her own terms.
