Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the CemeteryThe afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty paths of the Mezquitán Pantheon. Elena Cárdenas walked slowly, her suitcase rolling behind her with a rhythmic, hollow rattle against the cobblestones. Her cheek still burned where Mariana had struck her—a physical reminder of the bitter betrayal that had just played out at the doorstep of her home in Guadalajara.

She didn't cry. Grief had a way of hardening into something sharper, something cold and resolute, after you've buried a husband and watched your only child choose a parasite over you.

Elena stopped in front of Plot 404.

The white marble headstone bore a single, clean inscription: Roberto Cárdenas. Beloved Husband and Father. My love is the wall that protects you, even in silence.

Elena knelt, ignoring the ache in her knees. She traced the carved letters with a trembling finger.

—Well, Roberto, your daughter did it —she whispered, the wind carrying her words away among the ancient cypress trees—. She sold the house. The blue door. She let Sergio take everything.

She reached beneath the heavy marble base, feeling along the damp concrete seam where the stone met the earth. Her fingers brushed against something wrapped in thick layers of heavy-duty plastic and sealed with industrial wax tape.

She pulled it free.

It was a manila envelope, heavier than she expected. With a small pocket knife from her purse, she slit the plastic open. Inside was a legal document stamped with a notary’s seal, dated eight years ago, just three weeks before Roberto passed away from his heart condition.

Attached to it was a handwritten note in Roberto’s familiar, elegant cursive:

"Elena, my love. If you are reading this, it means our daughter forgot where she came from. Sergio is a vulture, and Mariana is blind. I knew this day might come. I changed the title deed before I died, but not the way they think. Let them sell it, my love. Let them taste their own greed. But remember: the trap doesn't snap until the last rat enters the cheese."

Elena opened the official document. Her eyes widened as she read the name of the buyer listed on the registry—and the secret condition Roberto had quietly embedded into the foundation of the house.

The game had just begun. And Sergio and Mariana had no idea they had just signed their own financial and legal death warrants.
