Chapter 5 - The Queen ReturnsDawn was breaking over Guadalajara, painting the sky in streaks of bruised purple and gold.

Elena Cárdenas sat in the quiet, sunlit courtyard of a magnificent, colonial-style mansion in the hills of San Jerónimo—a place she hadn't visited in decades. Birds chirped in the lush orange trees, and the smell of fresh cinnamon coffee filled the morning air.

She wore a spotless white linen dress, her silver hair brushed back with absolute elegance. Gone was the exhausted, downtrodden mother carrying a worn-out suitcase. In her place sat the true matriarch of the Cárdenas legacy.

The heavy wooden gates at the front of the estate swung open. A black Mercedes drove up the cobblestone driveway and parked smoothly by the fountain.

Mateo Silva stepped out, holding a thick leather folder. He walked up the stone steps, took off his hat, and bowed respectfully to Elena.

—It is done, Doña Elena —Mateo said softly, taking a seat across from her at the iron patio table—. The authorities executed the warrants at midnight. Sergio is currently in holding at Puente Grande, and Mariana is at the district precinct awaiting preliminary interrogation.

Elena took a slow sip of her coffee. Her hand didn't shake.

—And the house? —she asked, her voice calm, devoid of emotion.

—The title has reverted entirely back to the primary trust —Mateo replied, sliding the official documents across the table—. No one can touch it. Not creditors, not judges, and certainly not scam artists. It is fully yours, exactly as Roberto planned it down to the final comma.

Elena stared at the papers. Memories rushed back—Roberto smiling as he planted the bougainvillea by the gate, the sound of baby Mariana’s laughter echoing through the halls, the quiet nights after he passed away where she had wept into his pillow.

—Did she cry? —Elena asked quietly.

—Like a child who realized she broke her favorite toy —Mateo answered honestly—. She asked for you, Elena. Over and over again. She kept screaming that she’s your only daughter, that you wouldn't let this happen to her.

Elena stood up, walking slowly to the edge of the terrace to look out over the sprawling view of the valley below.

—My daughter died the moment she raised her hand against me, Mateo —Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper—. The woman locked in that cell is just a stranger wearing my memories.

—What are your orders for the next step? —Mateo asked, stepping closer.

Elena turned around, her eyes flashing with a fierce, terrifying brilliance.

—Let them rot in holding for forty-eight hours. Let Sergio feel what it’s like to lose everything he stole. And then... bring Mariana to me. I have a very special lesson to teach her about the true value of a mother’s home.
