Chapter 4 - THE WEB OF DECEIT

"Lying?" Lorraine let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the tension like a razor. She stepped backward, positioning herself protectively—or rather, weaponizingly—between me and the crib. "Brooke, sweetie, don't insult your husband's intelligence. He's an operations director. He understands risk management. And right now, the greatest risk to his future is a wife who is medically, emotionally, and mentally unfit to be a mother."
"Shut up!" I roared, lunging forward.
Before I could reach her, Lorraine hit a button on the voice recorder. A clear, synthesized audio clip began to play out loud in the quiet nursery:
"Travis works too much... he doesn't even see how miserable I am here... I can't stand his mother watching my every move... I wish I never had this baby..."
My blood ran completely cold. The voice was unmistakable. It sounded identical to Brooke’s.
"You deep-faked it," I hissed, realization slamming into me. "You used audio from her phone calls and manipulated it."
"Deep-faked? Oh, Travis, technology is wonderful, isn't it?" Lorraine smiled coldly, slipping the recorder back into her designer jacket pocket. "Who do you think a family court judge is going to believe? A successful, stable grandmother stepping in to save an infant, or a postpartum mother with a history of severe medical complications and a digital footprint full of unstable audio clips?"
Brooke let out a choked cry, collapsing sideways against the rug. "Travis... please... she threatened Jonah... she said if I didn't read those lines into her phone, she would take him away where we would never find him... she poisoned my water, Travis! That's why I've been so dizzy!"
The words hit me like a physical blow. Poisoned.

I looked at the open prescription bottle on the floor near Brooke. I knelt down instantly, scooping it up, and read the label. It wasn't one of Brooke's vitamins. It was a high-dose blood pressure medication—something that would cause severe lethargy, dizziness, and confusion in someone with low postpartum blood volume.
My mother had been slowly drugging my wife to make her look unstable.
