Chapter 6 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPRESS

Lorraine’s grip on Jonah slipped just an inch—panic finally overriding her calculated arrogance.
"Travis, I was only trying to help! You're my son! You can't do this to your own mother!" she shrieked, her voice finally cracking into desperate, ugly hysteria as the sound of screeching cruiser tires echoed outside our driveway.
"You stopped being my mother the moment you decided to terrorize my recovering wife and use my newborn son as a pawn," I said firmly.
I reached out, my hands steady and unyielding, and gently pried Jonah from her trembling arms. The moment my son was safely against my chest, a massive weight lifted off my shoulders. Jonah let out a quiet sigh, instinctively burying his tiny face against my shirt.
Behind me, Brooke crawled forward, wrapping her arms weakly around my ankles, sobbing tears of pure relief. "Travis... oh god... thank you..."
Heavy footsteps echoed down our front hallway, followed by firm, authoritative voices.
"Police! Phoenix PD! Stay where you are!"
Two uniformed officers burst into the nursery, hands resting on their duty belts, scanning the room for threats. Their eyes landed immediately on Lorraine, who stood frozen by the door, and then on me holding the baby, with Brooke weeping on the floor.
"Officer," I said, looking directly at the senior sergeant. "That woman right there broke into our home, harassed a vulnerable postpartum recovery patient, administered unprescribed sedatives, and threatened the safety of my infant son. I want her placed under immediate citizen's arrest, and I have all the cloud-backed video surveillance ready to submit as evidence."

Lorraine’s face contorted into pure venom as the cuffs were slapped onto her wrists. As the officers led her past me down the hallway, she spat out her final, venomous words:
"You'll regret this, Travis! You think you won, but you know nothing about what I set in motion!"
