Chapter 1 - Shadows Beneath the StairsThe air in the basement grew instantly colder, the ambient hum of the furnace muffled by the sudden, suffocating silence.

Noah’s small, trembling finger pointed directly into the pitch-black void beneath the wooden steps. My heart hammered against my ribs—not from exhaustion, but from a cold, rising dread that eclipsed everything I had felt in that Manhattan boardroom.

"What do you mean, Noah?" My voice was a low, desperate rasp. I kept Lily tucked securely against my chest, her tiny fingers clutching the collar of my shirt so tightly her knuckles were white. "Who else was down here?"

Noah swallowed hard, his eyes reflecting the harsh glare of the tripod-mounted camera light. "A man. He came twice this week while you were at the office. Mom called him 'Mr. Sloane' when she thought we were asleep, but sometimes she called him... the Chairman."

Victor Sloane.

The name struck me like a physical blow. The chairman of my board. The man currently sitting in a glass-walled skyscraper downtown, waiting for me to sign away the culmination of my life’s work. The architect of a forty-million-dollar acquisition, and now, as the chilling pieces clicked violently into place, the architect of my total destruction.

"Dad?" Lily whimpered, burying her face deeper into my neck. "Is that bad man still here?"

"No, sweetie. I'm here now. Nobody is going to hurt you." I looked up at the head of the basement stairs, where my chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, stood framed in the doorway with two members of my private security detail.

Marcus took in the scene—the camera, the accusatory papers taped to the wall, the locked metal cabinet hanging open, and now the dark recess beneath the stairs. His face went pale.

"Adrian," Marcus said, his voice tight with professional alarm. "We need to clear this house immediately. If Sloane has direct ties to what’s happening here, this isn't just a domestic dispute. This is a corporate hostile takeover executed through a psychological hostage crisis."

"He didn't just want my company, Marcus," I whispered, staring down at the dark crawlspace. "He wanted me completely erased."

From the upper floor, a sharp, metallic crash echoed through the stairwell, followed by Lena’s shrill, frantic screams.
