Chapter 2 - THE UNDERBOSS'S BETRAYALCarlo Rossi, Dominic’s most trusted underboss, stepped out of the shadows of the narrow hallway. He was holding a small, suppressed pistol, aimed directly at Dominic’s chest.

Dominic didn't flinch. He didn't even turn around.

"Carlo," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold register. "Put the gun down. You're walking into a grave."

"I'm walking into a promotion," Carlo sneered, his eyes darting toward me with venomous satisfaction. "The Duca family offered me the entire Chicago waterfront if I delivered the boss and his little civilian girlfriend. Valente thought he was so smart hiding her in Boston. But empires fall from the inside, boss."

My hands rested protectively over my stomach. The stranger who had grabbed me earlier lunged toward me, but a sudden, violent crash from the window above shattered the glass.

Two tactical operatives dropped silently into the room, their suppressed rifles trained directly on Carlo and his accomplice.
