"I knew you leaked the hospital records to the Ducas three months ago. I just wanted to see how far you'd crawl before I stepped on you."

Carlo’s face drained of color. He swung his weapon toward Dominic, but before his finger could squeeze the trigger, a muffled thud echoed through the room.
Carlo dropped his weapon, clutching his shoulder as he collapsed to the wooden floorboards. The second operative swiftly neutralized the remaining intruder with a clean sweep.
Dominic didn't look at the bleeding men. He crossed the room in two long strides, dropping to his knees in front of me. His large, calloused hands hovered inches from my waist, trembling as if he were afraid I would shatter if he touched me.
"Meline," he whispered, looking up into my eyes with tears shining in his dark lashes. "Are you hurt? Did he touch you?"

"I'm fine," I breathed, my voice shaking as the adrenaline finally crashed. "The baby... the baby is fine."
Dominic pressed his forehead gently against my abdomen, his shoulders shaking with a sob of pure relief. "I'm sorry," he murmured against my sweater. "I'm so sorry I made you run. But I swear to you, by everything I am... nobody will ever touch you again."
