Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattering ExpectationsAbby froze dead in her tracks, her canvas tote bag slipping from her shoulder and hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud. A bunch of organic celery poked out of the top, rolling across the entryway rug like a tiny, pathetic log.

Claire jumped back as if she’d been burned, her face flushing a violent shade of crimson. She stumbled against the counter, her hands flying up to cover her mouth.
"Abby," Claire choked out, her voice trembling. "I—it's not what it looks like—"
"You're kissing my brother," Abby said, her voice completely devoid of inflection. It was that terrifying, unnatural calm that precedes a Category 5 hurricane. "In the kitchen. At..." She glanced wildly at her phone. "At 6:00 AM on a Thursday when you were supposed to be in Ohio visiting your aunt."
"My project wrapped early," I said, stepping smoothly in front of Claire to shield her from the initial blast of Abby's fury. "And technically, my name is on the deed, so I have a right to be in my own kitchen."
"Don't you dare play the technicality card with me, Mason Reed!" Abby snapped, her voice rising sharply as color flooded her cheeks. She pointed an accusatory finger straight past my shoulder at Claire. "You! You swore to me! You swore on our entire ten-year friendship that you were just housesitting to save money for your studio! You promised me you were over him!"
"I never said I was over him," Claire whispered, her voice dropping so low I barely caught it.
Abby let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that sounded like breaking glass. "Are you out of your mind?! Do you have any idea what kind of mess this is? If Mom and Dad find out—hell, if anyone finds out—things are going to implode!"
"Nothing is going to implode, Abs," I said, keeping my tone steady, projecting the cool authority I usually reserved for contractors arguing over steel beam loads. "Calm down. Take a breath."
"Don't tell me to calm down!" Abby fired back, pacing a tight circle by the coat rack. "You've been gone for nine months! Claire has been living in this house, sleeping in your bed—"
"I slept in the guest room!" Claire interjected defensively, her cheeks burning even brighter.
"—sleeping in your guest room, breathing your air, acting like some domestic goddess leaving little love letters all over the place—" Abby stopped dead, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the kitchen island. "Wait. What is that?"
She marched past us, her eyes locked on the open envelope still resting on the counter next to the coffee maker.
"Abby, no—don't touch that," Claire warned, lunging forward, but it was too late.
Abby snatched the letter. Her eyes scanned the lines at lightning speed. I watched her expression shift from sheer outrage to profound shock, and finally, to something deeply unsettling—something calculating.
The silence in the kitchen stretched out, thick and suffocating.
Abby lowered the paper slowly. She looked from Claire to me, and then back to Claire, a strange, tight smile touching the corners of her mouth.
"Well," Abby said softly, folding the letter with terrifying precision. "This changes everything."
"Abby, what are you talking about?" I asked, a sudden knot forming in my stomach.
"I'm talking about the fact," Abby said, her eyes gleaming with an eerie light, "that you two think you're so clever. But you have no idea what has actually been happening in this house while you were away, Mason. You think Claire just collected your mail?"
Claire went completely pale. "Abby. Stop."
"No, Claire," Abby said, turning to her best friend with a chillingly sweet smile. "If you're going to play house with my brother, you deserve to know what you walked into. Because the note on the fridge? That wasn't the first one left in this house."
I turned to Claire, my blood running cold. "What is she talking about?"
May you like
Claire wouldn't meet my eyes. She looked down at her sneakers, her hands trembling violently.
"Tell him, Claire," Abby urged, stepping in close like a ringmaster in a circus of chaos. "Tell him whose handwriting was on the other notes found around this house before you even moved in."
