Chapter 5 - The Web of DeceitAbby looked like a cornered animal. For a second, I thought she might deny it, might scream, might try to spin some elaborate lie. But the heavy, suffocating silence of the room crushed all her defenses.

She let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders collapsing inward.
"I had to," Abby whispered, staring at the floorboards.
"You had to?" I repeated, my voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and blinding rage. "You sold my privacy? You let a stalker into my home?"
"You don't understand how much debt I was in, Mason!" Abby burst out, tears finally spilling down her cheeks as she looked up, desperate for understanding. "The student loans, the clinic bills for Mom’s final months that insurance wouldn't cover, the credit cards... I was drowning! Sarah offered to clear my accounts if I just gave her access to the house when you were gone. She just wanted to feel close to you, she said! She swore she wouldn't touch anything!"
"She was living in my closet, Abby!" I shouted, the volume echoing off the tile floor. "She was sleeping in my clothes!"
"And she paid off my entire debt last week!" Abby yelled back, her voice breaking. "I was trapped, Mason! What was I supposed to do?!"
Claire stood frozen beside me, her eyes darting between Abby and Sarah, the horror of the revelation settling heavily over her.
"You traded your brother's safety and privacy for cash," Claire said quietly, her voice trembling with profound disgust. "Abby... how could you?"
"Stay out of this, Claire!" Sarah stepped forward, her eyes flashing with venom. "This is family business. You were just a hired hand meant to keep the dust off the furniture while Mason was away. You were never supposed to fall in love with him. You were never supposed to leave your pathetic little love notes all over his house!"
Sarah lunged toward the kitchen island, her hand shooting out to grab the open envelope containing Claire's confession.
"Give that back!" Claire screamed, moving faster than I’ve ever seen her move.
Claire intercepted Sarah's hand, grabbing her wrist just as her fingers brushed the paper. A struggle broke out across the granite countertop. The white bakery box tipped over, spilling a dozen expensive pastries across the floor in a flurry of powdered sugar and crumbs.
"Let go of me, you little parasite!" Sarah snarled, her manicured nails raking across Claire's arm, leaving a bright red scratch.
That was the breaking point.
I dropped the cast-iron skillet with a deafening crash, stepped between them, and grabbed Sarah by the shoulders, shoving her backward with enough force to send her crashing hard against the pantry door.
"Get out," I said, my voice dangerously low, vibrating with a rage I had never felt in my life. "Get out of my house right now, Sarah, or I swear to God I will drag you out by your hair and let the police sort out the rest."
Sarah slid down against the pantry door, her trench coat crumpled around her. But instead of looking defeated, she began to laugh. A high, hysterical sound that sent chills straight down my spine.
"You think I came here alone, Mason?" she wheezed, wiping a smudge of powdered sugar from her cheek. "You think I walked into a house knowing you were back without a backup plan?"
Before I could process her words, the smart lock on the front door beeped loudly.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
The motorized deadbolt turned, and the heavy oak front door swung wide open.
Two men in dark suits and sunglasses stepped into the foyer, flanked by a local uniform officer I recognized from the town precinct.

"Mason Reed?" the lead detective said, stepping into the kitchen with a stern expression, flashing a gold badge. "We have a warrant to search the premises regarding an ongoing federal investigation into industrial espionage and corporate theft tied to your overseas deployment."
My heart stopped dead in my chest.
