Chapter 1 - THE TIDE TURNS

The air in the NICU grew suffocatingly quiet. The low, rhythmic beep of the incubators carrying Liam and Chloe was the only sound breaking the sudden, heavy silence.

Dominic’s smug expression slowly froze, the blood draining from his face as my words hung in the sterile air. A hospital you own.

"What... what kind of joke is this?" Dominic scoffed, though his voice wavered slightly. He tried to reclaim his dominant stance, adjusting his expensive tie. "You don’t have a grandfather, Audrey. You’re an orphan. You’ve been an orphan since you were six. Stop playing pathetic mental games because you can’t face reality."

Natalie shifted uncomfortably inside my ivory cashmere coat, pulling it tighter around her swollen belly. "Dominic, let’s just go. She’s losing her mind from the post-partum trauma. It's sad, really."

"I agree, it is sad," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the raw, physical agony tearing through my stitched abdomen. "It’s sad that after four years of marriage, you never bothered to ask why my last name didn't match the orphanage records. Or why the medical supply company you started mysteriously received its first five-million-dollar angel investment from an anonymous offshore venture firm."

Dominic’s eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"

Before he could take another step toward me, heavy footsteps echoed rapidly down the polished corridor. The heavy double doors of the NICU swung open with a resounding thud.

Four armed hospital security officers burst in, followed immediately by a man in a tailor-made charcoal suit that made Dominic’s look like a cheap rack purchase. Behind them walked an elderly man with silver hair, piercing blue eyes, and a posture that commanded the entire floor.

It was Arthur Sterling. The steel magnate, real estate titan, and majority shareholder of Vanguard Health Systems—the conglomerate that owned Saint Aurelia Medical Center, along with thirty other top-tier hospitals across the continent.

"Grandfather," I murmured, resting my hands on the arms of my wheelchair.

Dominic turned around, his mouth opening in shock. "Mr... Mr. Sterling?" His voice sounded thin, almost pathetic. As a medical supply distributor, Dominic had spent two years begging for a thirty-second meeting with Vanguard’s procurement team, only to be rejected every time.

Arthur Sterling didn't even glance at Dominic. He walked straight past him, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the tile, until he stopped right beside my chair. He placed a warm, firm hand on my shoulder, his eyes softening as he looked down at me, and then at the two fragile incubators behind me.

"You took too long to call me, little girl," Arthur said softly, his voice trembling with a mix of deep affection and suppressed fury. "Look at what these vultures did to you."

"I wanted to see if he had a soul, Grandfather," I replied, looking straight at Dominic. "He doesn't."

Arthur finally turned around. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating killer instinct that had built a multi-billion-dollar empire.

"So," Arthur said, his voice echoing in the small room. "You are the boy who thought he could starve my granddaughter and throw my great-grandchildren into the street."

Dominic’s knees literally buckled. "Grandfather? Audrey... Audrey is a Sterling? No... no, that's impossible! Her records—"

"Her records were sealed for her own protection after her parents died," Arthur cut in sharply. "She wanted a life free from fortune hunters. She wanted to know if a man could love her for who she was, not for my money. And you, Dominic... you failed the test in the most disgraceful way imaginable."

Natalie stepped back, her face pale. "Wait, Dominic... you said she was a nobody! You said her family trust was just a few thousand dollars!"

"Shut up, Natalie!" Dominic hissed, sweat breaking out on his forehead. He turned back to Arthur, his hands raised in surrender. "Mr. Sterling, please! This is a massive misunderstanding! Audrey and I... we just had a marital spat. I was stressed about the babies' medical bills! I didn't mean any of it!"

"You emptied her accounts," Arthur said, holding up a finger. "You canceled her credit cards while she was unconscious in surgery. You brought your mistress into the NICU to mock her." Arthur’s eyes locked onto the coat Natalie was wearing. "And you gave her my late wife’s custom-designed coat."

Arthur motioned to the head of security. "Remove that coat from that woman immediately."

"What?!" Natalie gasped, clutching the lapels. "You can't do that! I'm pregnant!"

"You are wearing stolen property inside a private facility," Arthur said coldly. "Officers, enforce it."

Two large guards stepped forward. Within seconds, despite Natalie’s screeching and struggling, they peeled the cashmere coat off her shoulders, folding it neatly before handing it back to Arthur. Natalie stood there shivering in a thin dress, completely humiliated.

"Now," Arthur said, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his breast pocket. He made a single call. "Julian. Execute Directive Seven against Apex Medical Solutions. Freeze all pending contracts, initiate a full forensic audit on their supply chain, and call in the twelve-million-dollar credit facility we underwrote last spring. Effective this second."

Dominic’s phone violently vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out with shaking hands. A text notification popped up, followed by a frantic call from his CFO.

"Mr. Vance!" the CFO screamed over the speakerphone, so loud the entire room could hear. "The bank just froze all our operational capital! Vanguard Health just canceled our master contract, and Federal Marshals are at the office with a search warrant for tax fraud! What did you do?!"

Dominic dropped his phone. It cracked on the floor.

May you like

He stared at me, his eyes filled with pure terror. "Audrey... please... you can't do this to me! I’m the father of your children!"

"You signed the divorce papers, Dominic," I said, holding up the signed blue folder. "You said we were on our own. And as of five minutes ago... you are completely bankrupt."
