Chapter 4 - THE RECKONING AT THE BOARDROOM

Three weeks had passed.
Through the miraculous care of Saint Aurelia’s top medical team, Liam and Chloe were finally stable, gaining weight, and out of critical condition. I spent every waking hour sitting between their incubators, holding their tiny fingers, feeling the warmth of their life growing stronger every day.
But while my body was healing, my legal team was waging total war.
Dominic had managed to post bail using the last bit of leverage he had—borrowing money from a high-interest loan shark who didn't know his assets were frozen. He thought he could salvage his company, Apex Medical, by calling an emergency shareholders' meeting to sell off the remaining medical inventory before the federal court seized it.
The boardroom at Apex Medical headquarters was filled with anxious investors, board members, and legal representatives. Dominic sat at the head of the long marble table, dark circles under his eyes, looking ragged and desperate.
"Listen to me!" Dominic slammed his hand on the table. "The media reports are exaggerated! The Sterling family is trying to pull a hostile takeover, but I still own 51% of the voting shares in this company! If we vote today to liquidate our European supply chain, we can raise twenty million dollars in cash and clear our immediate debt!"
"I wouldn't count on those votes, Dominic," a sharp, clear voice echoed from the back of the room.
The heavy double doors swept open.
I walked into the boardroom. I wasn't in a hospital gown anymore. I wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, my hair styled impeccably, high heels clicking with absolute authority against the hardwood floor. Beside me walked my grandfather, Arthur Sterling, and behind us came a team of six corporate attorneys.
The entire boardroom fell dead silent.
Dominic stood up so fast his chair fell backward. "Audrey?! What are you doing here? You don't have a seat on this board! Security!"
"Security works for the building owner, Dominic," Arthur said smoothly, taking a seat at the far end of the table. "And Vanguard Real Estate purchased this entire skyscraper at auction yesterday morning."
"You... you can't just walk in here!" Dominic stammered. "I hold the majority stake!"
"Correction: You held the majority stake," I said, opening my sleek leather portfolio and sliding a stack of documents across the table to the board members.
"What is this?" the lead investor asked, scanning the papers.
"That," I explained, looking directly into Dominic’s panicked eyes, "is a legal notice of foreclosure. When Dominic started Apex Medical four years ago, he secured a ten-million-dollar line of credit from an offshore investment firm called Vanguard Capital. He believed it was an independent venture fund."
I paused, letting the silence heavy in the room settle.
"It wasn't. Vanguard Capital is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sterling Family Trust. I was the anonymous angel investor who funded your entire life, Dominic. Every piece of equipment, every contract, every paycheck you ever took from this company was underwritten by my money."
Dominic’s face went completely white. He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles turning stark white. "No... no... you’re lying..."
"And per the terms of your original financing agreement," Julian Vance added, stepping forward, "any breach of moral conduct, corporate fraud, or personal bankruptcy automatically triggers a default, converting all common stock to the lender. As of 9:00 AM this morning, Audrey Sterling owns 84% of Apex Medical Solutions."
The board members immediately stood up, turning their backs on Dominic and rushing over to shake my hand.
"Ms. Sterling, we had no idea!" one board member stammered. "Dominic lied to us about the company’s capitalization! We want to work with you!"
"You will," I said coldly. "Starting with the immediate termination of Dominic Vance as CEO, without severance, effective this exact second."
Dominic stumbled backward, collapsing against the wall. Everything he had built, every lie he had told, every ounce of power he thought he held—it was all wiped away in front of the very people he had tried to impress.
"Audrey..." Dominic whimpered, his voice cracking as the board members began walking out of the room, leaving him completely isolated. "Please... you can't destroy me like this. We were married. We have children!"
I walked up to him, stopping just inches away. I looked down at the man I had once loved, the man who had left me to die in a NICU chair while my babies fought for breath.
"You left my babies to starve, Dominic," I said, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "You took my coat, my dignity, and my money, and gave it to another woman. You didn't destroy yourself because of me. You destroyed yourself because you believed a woman’s silence was weakness."
I turned my back on him.
"Julian," I said over my shoulder. "Hand him the second set of papers."
Dominic looked down as Julian dropped a new legal document onto the table.

"What's this?" Dominic asked, trembling.
"That," Julian replied, "is a formal motion for sole legal and physical custody of Liam and Chloe, along with a restraining order. You will never see those children again."
