Chapter 10 - THE FINAL CHOICE AND THE UNEXPECTED CROWNThe silence in the penthouse was absolute, broken only by the distant, muffled howling of the winter wind against the ballistic glass.

Matteo slowly lowered his fist. He stood tall, towering over the bloodied David Rossi, his face carved from cold, unyielding granite. But beneath the mask of the mafia kingpin, Elena saw the agonizing storm raging in his dark eyes.

"An automated switch," Matteo said, his voice dangerously quiet. "You think you're clever, Rossi."

"I'm a survivor," David spat, pushing himself up onto one elbow, wiping blood from his mouth with a smirk. "Just like you, Matteo. You want your empire, or you want the nurse and the brat? You can't have both. Hand them over, or watch your entire life burn to the ground by midnight."

Elena clutched Katia tighter against her chest, her heart breaking into a million jagged pieces. She looked at Matteo. She saw the impossible weight of an empire resting on his shoulders—an empire built on blood, loyalty, and survival. She knew what men in his world did when cornered. She expected him to hesitate. She expected him to weigh the odds.

Instead, Matteo did something that defied every law of the underworld.

He didn't look at David. He didn't look at Vance or the security monitors. He looked straight at Elena.

"You think I built this empire for money, Rossi?" Matteo asked, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. He turned his back entirely on David, walking slowly toward Elena until he stood right in front of her.

He reached out, his massive, scarred hands gently cupping her face, his thumbs wiping away her tears with a tenderness that defied every monster story ever told about him.

"Matteo..." Elena whispered, her voice breaking. "If he leaks the files—"

"Let them leak," Matteo murmured softly, his dark eyes burning only with her. "Let the FBI come. Let the syndicates burn. I started with nothing in the gutters of Palermo, Elena. I can go back to nothing tomorrow."

David scrambled up to his knees, his face twisting in blind panic. "Are you insane? You'll lose everything! You'll be hunted for the rest of your life!"

"I already lost everything the day my enemies took my family," Matteo said without turning around, his gaze never leaving Elena's eyes. "Until she walked onto my private jet and saved my daughter's life... and gave me a reason to breathe again."

Matteo turned his head slightly, giving a single, subtle nod to Agent Vance.

Before David could reach into his coat for his detonator, Vance moved with blurring speed. The butt of her Sig Sauer cracked against the back of David’s skull with a sickening crunch. David’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed limp onto the shattered glass.

"Secure him," Matteo ordered coldly without looking back. "Put him in the lower holding cells. Strip him of every device. We'll dismantle his network piece by piece before sunrise."

"Yes, Mr. Volkov," Vance said, dragging the unconscious accountant across the marble floor by his collar.

The elevator doors closed, sealing David away.

Elena stood frozen in the center of the penthouse, the city lights twinkling far below through the reinforced glass. Katia let out a soft, sleepy yawn against her shoulder, completely oblivious to the war that had just been fought and won over her cradle.

Matteo wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling them against his chest, burying his face in Elena's hair.

"You're never going home to Boston, Elena," he whispered against her skin, a fierce, possessive, yet infinitely tender promise vibrating in his voice. "Because your home is right here. With us. Forever."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief. She leaned her head against his broad shoulder, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart.

She had boarded a private jet as a broken ghost running from a grave.

Now, she stood as the queen of a dark, dangerous empire—and she knew, with absolute certainty, she would never want to leave.
