Chapter 5 - THE CRACK IN THE ARMORElena’s initial instinct was to fight. She shoved her palms against his chest, pushing with all her might, but Matteo didn't even budge. He felt like a wall of granite.

Yet, as his lips moved against hers—firm, demanding, yet carrying an underlying, desperate ache that mirrored her own long-buried desolation—her resistance crumbled from the inside out. Her hands, which had been pushing him away, slid up his lapels, gripping the fabric of his shirt as a traitorous, searing heat flooded her veins.

For fourteen months, Elena had felt only cold. The cold of the hospital morgue, the cold of her empty bed, the cold of a life abruptly snapped in half. But this—this was burning, chaotic life.

When Matteo finally pulled back, his chest heaving just as heavily as hers, his dark eyes were burning with a terrifying intensity. He rested his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet dark of the nursery.

"Don't ever do that again," Elena whispered, her voice shaking, though whether from anger or longing she no longer knew.

"We both know that's a lie," Matteo murmured against her lips.

He didn't kiss her again. Instead, he stepped back, his expression smoothing back into the mask of the untouchable mafia kingpin, though his jaw remained tightly clenched. Without another word, he turned and walked out of the nursery, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him with finality.

Elena slid down until she sat on the floor beside the crib, burying her face in her hands as a single, hot tear finally escaped. She was losing her mind. She was falling for the monster who held her captive.

The next morning, the fragile equilibrium of the penthouse shattered.

Elena was in the kitchen pouring herself coffee when Agent Vance rushed in, her tactical earpiece flashing a frantic red light. Her hand was already resting on the grip of her concealed Glock.

"Mrs. Rossi, get down," Vance barked, her voice stripped of all polite professionalism.

"What? What's happening?" Elena dropped her mug, the ceramic shattering against the marble tile, splashing hot coffee across her slippers.

"Perimeter breach. Sector Four. The elevator lock has been bypassed," Vance shouted, grabbing Elena by the arm and yanking her toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind the pantry wall. "It's the Moretti syndicate. They found us."

"Katia!" Elena screamed, horror gripping her throat. "The baby is still in the nursery!"

Before Vance could stop her, Elena wrenched her arm out of the security agent's grip and sprinted down the hallway toward the nursery. The penthouse was suddenly dead silent, the ambient hum of the city cut off as the automated lockdown protocols kicked in, sealing all interior doors with thick steel bolts.

She burst into the nursery. Katia was awake, wailing in her crib, terrified by the sudden flashing red emergency lights overhead.

Elena scooped the baby into her arms, pressing her close. As she turned to run back toward the panic room, the double doors of the penthouse hallway echoed with a deafening CRASH.

Explosive charges.

The heavy oak doors of the nursery shuddered, splintering down the center as iron boots kicked them wide open.

Three men in black tactical gear stepped through the smoke, their assault rifles raised, their faces covered by black balaclavas. The leader lowered his weapon slightly, his eyes locking directly onto Elena and the baby in her arms. A cruel, jagged grin spread across his exposed mouth.

"Well, well," the leader hissed, his voice grating like gravel. "Matteo's little pet bird. Boss Moretti sends his regards. Hand over the brat."

Elena backed up against the ballistic glass window, her heart pounding so violently she felt sick. There was no way out. The drop was fifty stories straight down to the Manhattan pavement.

"Stay away from her," Elena snarled, her maternal instinct roaring to life with the ferocity of a caged tigress. She grabbed a heavy glass lamp from the side table and hurled it with all her might at the lead intruder.

The lamp shattered against his tactical vest, doing no damage, but it bought her two seconds.

The intruder raised his rifle, aiming straight at her chest. "End of the line, bitch."

Suddenly, the air behind the intruders erupted in violence.

Before the man could pull the trigger, a dark shadow dropped from the ceiling ventilation shaft like a striking viper. A silenced gunshot cracked through the room, and the lead intruder dropped instantly, a clean red hole between his eyes.

The other two whirled around, but they were already dead men.

Matteo Volkov materialized out of the smoke and blood. He moved with terrifying, lethal efficiency. A knife flashed in his right hand, slicing through an attacker's throat, while his left hand brought up a Sig Sauer pistol to drop the third man with a double-tap to the chest.

In less than three seconds, the three assassins lay bleeding out on the nursery floor.

Matteo stood amidst the carnage, his charcoal shirt stained with dark arterial spray, his chest heaving, his eyes wild and dilated with pure, unadulterated primal rage. He looked up, locking eyes with Elena, who was trembling violently, shielding Katia's face against her shoulder so the baby wouldn't see the blood.

Matteo dropped his weapons. He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Elena and the baby in a fierce, unbreakable embrace, pulling them both against his chest as if he could weld them into his own flesh.

"You're safe," Matteo choked out, his voice raw, trembling with a terror Elena had never heard from him before. "I've got you. Nobody touches my family."
