Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Oak

Three months later.
The Hudson Valley estate was quiet once more, bathed in the golden, amber light of an early autumn afternoon. The security grids had been upgraded, the traitors had been buried or locked away in impenetrable concrete boxes, and the Moretti syndicate stood stronger, wealthier, and more untouchable than it had ever been in its bloody history.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind him.
Alessandro didn't reach for his gun. He didn't tense his muscles. He didn't even turn around.

A pair of tiny, warm arms wrapped tentatively around his neck.
“Hi, Mr. Hide-and-Seek,” a cheerful little voice whispered right into his ear.
